Bullies may get kick out of seeing others in pain
By Julie Steenhuysen

Brain scans of teens with a history of aggressive bullying behavior suggest that they may actually get pleasure out of seeing someone else in pain, U.S. researchers said on Friday.

While this may come as little surprise to those who have been victimized by bullies, it is not what the researchers expected, Benjamin Lahey of the University of Chicago, who worked on the study, said in a telephone interview.

"The reason we were surprised is the prevailing view is these kids are cold and unemotional in their aggression," said Lahey, whose study appears in the journal Biological Psychology.

"This is looking like maybe they care very much," said Lahey, who worked on the study with Jean Decety, also of the University of Chicago.

The researchers compared eight boys ages 16 to 18 with aggressive conduct disorder to a group of eight adolescent boys with no unusual signs of aggression.

The boys with the conduct disorder had exhibited disruptive behavior such as starting a fight, using a weapon and stealing after confronting a victim.

They showed both groups video clips of someone inflicting pain on another person and tracked brain activity with a type of imaging called functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI.

In the aggressive teens, areas of the brain linked with feeling rewarded -- the amygdala and ventral striatum -- became very active when they observed pain being inflicted on others.

But they showed little activity in an area of the brain involved in self-regulation -- the medial prefrontal cortex and the temporoparietal junction -- as was seen in the control group.

"It is entirely possible their brains are lighting in the way they are because they experience seeing pain in others as exciting and fun and pleasurable," Lahey said.

"We need to test that hypothesis more, but that is what it looks like," he said.

Lahey said the differences between the two groups were strong and striking, but cautioned that the study was small and needs to be confirmed by a larger study.

Yes, more studies. The researchers should have been sitting next to me back in the 50s, watching my older brother stab and burn insects with glee on his face and they might have realized this sooner. LOL

To me bullies are always weak. By victimizing others they believe they are proving they are strong by hurting others.

But really it is the most extreme weakness.

Shades of A Clockwork Orange. Don't researchers read or go to see movies?

ROB you would think that, but we see you as an inferior life form...like a SCHMOO or a KIGME. We see ourselves as God's way of culling the unfit.

i think the joys of bullying are well documented throughout history.
indeed the results of torture or suffering were of lively interest to the general public, e.g. at public hangings ('see 'im dance!').

now, of course, we are 'above' such things at home; but on CNN a bombed out village and twisted bodies of 'terrorists' are still cause for patriotic celebration. oh, and the bullies have joined Blackwater, private security**, and are sent to do 'what has to be done.'

By "we" are you saying you're speaking for the group here? Because I really don't need you to speak for me, thank you very much.

Oh sweet kitty-cat, please pretty please don't quote him! I have him on "ignore" and it's oh-so-good!

;)

ROB

Not a problem, Rob.

Bullies get whined about a lot, but we provide an essential public service.

Back to the thread...

I have a book of etchings by Hogarth and he did a four part series called The Four Stages of Cruelty. In the first stage, boys are doing horrible things to animals. I shuddered at first viewing, but knew all too well that this side of boys did exist back in 1750 when Hogarth first engraved it and still exists today.

This is not a surprize to anyone who has reared sons.

Ugly but not surprising. It takes energy to devise and carry out torment; there would naturally have to be a reward. Serial killers' brains are said to be wired differently, too: the sexual thrill that others receive from, well, sexual stimuli, serial killers receive from inflicting powerlessness, terror or physical pain.

So is there anyone out there willing to share their youthful days days of cruelty?

Here is another story of my brother, two years older. Charlton Heston was in some movie with Amazon-sized ants and he solved his ant problem with fire, huge bonfires to beat the giant ants back.

My brother decided to rid our back yard of the tiny harmless black ants that lived in an old grapefruit tree. He put lots of sticks at the base of the tree along with dried grass. Yes, he burned those ants right off the sides the the tree. Adding more fuel to the fire, he continued the annilhilation with sheer joy, until the tree itself caught on fire and my mom had to put it out with our hose. I was the one who ran in to tell her what my brother was up to. The tree was next to the garage... so you can imagine how upset Mom was.

The tree died and we had to cut it down. I can't remember what they did to my brother. Spanked him I think. Later he almost burn down the neighborhood with fire arrows after some other movie. He had an arson problem, too, like many other boys.

My sons got into malotov cocktails, for Christ's sake and the Fire Department was called. Maybe, it is just my genes, but somehow I doubt it.

Nope, I don't remember ever being a destructive child. Not into hurting anyone or anything. Not to the point of actually doing anything about it. I have wanted to punch a ton of people in the face, but never have.

When I was five or six and trying out some shiny new red rainboots, I saw an earthworm on the sidewalk and decided to squash it, just for fun. I pressed down on the poor slimy thing and instead of dying in a cooperative fashion, it curled around the toe of my boot. I had to scrape it off. It died squirming, in pieces.

I can still remember the sudden shock of mingled horror and guilt. I think I missed out on a career in the natural sciences because the task of dissecting an earthworm in high school biology class was utterly repellant; a reminder of that moment of pointless cruelty and shame.

NO! Dear!

You dont understand how serial killers think.

Most were brutalized as children by their parents and peers. While this was going on THE VILLAGE looked the other way and refused to intervene, mostly because THE VILLAGE is filled with cowards.

If anyone at all champions the kid, the kid generally turns out okay. If not he concludes that people arent okay and he isnt okay, and its okay to vent his rage on ordinary people or people who match a profile in his mind.

I dont believe the sexual component has anything to do with 'sex' per se. The 'sex' is simply a means to relax afterwards. To de-escalate.

You dont understand me at all. Most of the time I'm happy as a pig in shit; I'm blessed in many ways, and know it.

I've reached the age where I can speak my mind and people can kiss my fat ass if they dont like it. I have zero tolerance for bullshit and fantasies people inflict on each other. If I think youre a stupid son of a bitch I'll tell you; you never have to wonder what I think of you. If you dont like me I cant care less. This isnt where I get my contentment or friends.

Its a board populated by many morons and a few thinkers, but mostly asshat idgits who need their egos deflated.

I've still got an interesting scar on the back of my neck where a bully put a cigarette out on it.

RG666, That is fucked what that bully did that to you, with others assisting and laughing in agreement, no doubt. Caveman mentality.

When I was a freshman and my brother was a junior, I watched my brother get bullied outside a club one night by some Mexicanos that I was hanging with at the time. The leader, a senior named Vince Leones, had a big crush on me and we were out on a date in his cherryed out lowrider. I whispered in his ear that the boy was my brother and he said, "No shit, that is your blood brother?" I nodded yes and felt bad because my brother was such a nerd at the time. Vince called off his guys and they never bothered him again. My brother, of course, was mad at me for stopping the fight. He thought he could handle four against one. Hardly. My Mom thanked me for saving his ass, but he never did.

So what kind of reason is there for mob mentality, lynch mobs and the like? United Bullies of America or something like that? What kick is there for four guys beating up one poor bastard? How does that show anything but cowardice?
