For those who would know: can I wear black to a wedding?

What's the etiquette? I have no idea. When I last went to a funeral, I was the only non-family member wearing black -- apparently things have changed and black at a funeral is no longer a requirement.

So does that mean I can wear black to a wedding? It is described as "semi-formal" yet it is taking place during the day. Truth be told, I am cheaply trying to avoid buying a new dress.

If it had sequins on it and a bright-colored accessory like a sash or a side shoulder bow to go with it, probably.

Uh, what? See if it's all Goth and what the others are wearing and don't be an attention whore at a wedding when it's the bride's day to shine and get all the looks.

Goth?

I'm too old for goth. Fuck I feel too old for everything these days.

Think more like a black cocktail dress.

If I remember correctly during the day, no. At night, yes.

But, this is from www.weddingchannel.com:

Wearing black: the long standing tradition of ladies not wearing black to a wedding has been overturned. Today, even the bridesmaids might be outfitted in black. Just make sure you don't look like you're attending a funeral. Consider accessorizing that little black dress with a brightly colored scarf or blazer.

eta....with the purple tights and scarf...you're good to go! Have fun.

I was going to wear bright purple tights and a purple scarf to make it a little more festive.

That would rock just fine. I'm totally with you on the saving money part. I think the only reason you should buy a new dress is if you're part of the procession or in the immediate family and will be sitting at the head table.

Yes, Goth. Lance Bass brought Goth back on 'Dancing With the Stars' last week during a tango - sorta the Cure meets the Nightmare Before Xmas - and surprisingly got high votes. This is neither here nor there, I just loved the routine and all the GOTH mentions.

Dress how you feel/want, but I wouldn't dare try to upshine the bride or make both parties uncomfortable unless I had the name Madonna or Prince.

Works for me. thanks.

Amen. I am all about saving money these days.

"Upshine the bride?" She will likely be wearing a $10k designer wedding dress, and I will be sitting in the corner drinking from a flask, (god I hope there will be wine) praying that my various extended family members don't fucking ask me any questions about what is going on in my life.

I am pretty well sure there isn't going to be a problem with me taking any attention away from the happy couple.

Of course you can wear black. You wear whatever you want. There are no silly rules. This isn't the 50s. ;)

Sounds like you wanna keep yourself as out-of-the-way and innocuous as possible. This isn't gonna turn into a John Hughes-meets-Tyler Perry type wedding functions, is it?

Hmmm.

What color is the flask is the best question it seems.

Silver and sparkly so that it makes others squint from its reflection each time you tip it or a dull black that remains inconspicuous? Either way, try not to have toooooooooooo much fun at the wedding, Funk.

It is HIGHLY possible there will be drama. Big time. There is a lot of anger brewing behind the scenes about this wedding. A couple of gravy trains got derailed as a result too...

None of it involves me though, so I'll sit in the corner and watch the show.

If the dress is cocktail length, the answer is yes.

Use a complimentary color in your accessories. Purple might be too dark though...black and tan works for an understated classic look.

I always wear black to weddings.

Because I hate weddings.

No one complains, so I guess it's alright.
