There's no such thing as a forum bully.

Someone felt the need to create an alt, just so they could call SeanH a bully anonymously. That's pathetic to the 10th degree. No one is going to take your lunch money. No one's going to meet you on the playground at 3PM. No one is taping your mouth shut, or giving you a swirly.

Three points to remember:

1. There are no "forum police", outside of the scant clean-up admins do here.
2. Your free speech is not being curtailed by regular members.
3. Opinions are not oppression.

One would think these would be self-evident but, apparently, not for everyone.

But there is such thing as bacon. now where the fuck is it?

They used to call me a bully, until they figured out I was just right about everything.

A forum bully is one who flames when he cannot refute. He (and it usually is a man) has nothing to back up his opinions but hot air, arrogance, and obscene words.

well, there are such things as forum bullies, but if you're weak enough to be bullied on the internet you seriously need to re-examine your life and find out exactly where it all went wrong.

This sort of individual is powerless without someone willfully playing the victim. A bully without power isn't a bully.

Yes, there are bullies. There are bullies in every community and social grouping humanity creates. Heaping verbal abuse on others is encouraged and rewarded on the General Board. It’s not subtle either; wild packs of forumites will descend on a person just to rip them to shreds.

It's the only reason I come here.

Packs of bullies can run together and inflict harm in real life.

This is an internet forum. No one gets ripped to shreds.

And, if someone feels they're getting clawed, they either hit the Ignore switch and avoid it, or don't, and thus lose the right to complain about it.

A bully doesn't have to be physical. Trolling someone and being cruel is just as much a bully as some jerk on a playground.

Eh. True, but I think that Rory has a point on the necessary complicity of the bullied in this specific setting. I can't see what excuse there is for not simply ignoring someone if s/he is really doing any serious damage.

Bingo.

Ignoring a RL bully can be extremely difficult. Ignoring a forum bully couldn't be easier.

If people put up with it then that's their problem but it doesn't make the instigator any less of a bully.

I'm wondering how I can be considered a bully when I tend to be in a minority of one whenever I attack someone.

It's a tribute to your prowess and relative ability. If only we could get you to use those awesome powers for good and not for evil.

My definition of a bully is someone who has power to intimidate and demean. In other words, success on this front is the qualifier. So, if they don't, they're not a bully.

In other words, a warrior isn't a warrior just because he carries a sword. He has to be able to use it.

I think that for the people who honestly believe that the on line world is a "real" world, the bully is real.
