Winter Fashions...Hm. Not bad.

Had reason to tour Bloomingdale's yesterday. I can't wear any of the winter fashions--they just won't suit my shape, but I must say, they are pretty nice and, unlike the plaids, pastels and bows of summer, very flattering. Early-to-mid 60's look which general make women look elegant and sexy. Either Jackie Kennedy, Twiggy or Diana Rigg. And the usual winter/autumnal colors.

And I know I mocked Ralph Lauren for that "Country Club" look he gave the American athletes at the Olympics, but gosh darn what did I know? The biggest look of all is looking like you're about to go fox hunting. Skinny jeans and riding boots. http://images.bloomingdales.com/is/image/BLM/products/1/optimized/934481_fpx.tif?wid=173&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bilin&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg

These ain't cheap either. I saw one pair that was $1220! That's $610 a foot! Lucky for me, I can't pull off boots that tall. Unlucky for me, they're getting taller. Some are coming up over the knee...

I suspect this is going to be a good year to be a dominatrix.

It does make me wonder, however. These fashions were created for winter at least six months to a year ago, while the economy was still riding high on the hog (so to speak). I wonder, did the fashion world know something? Was this it's last hurrah? Odd that as banks crash around us and the stock market goes up in flames that the fashion look should be so very chic and rich, as if we all were off to fox hunts or, putting on our gloves and fur-trimmed coats, ready to have lunch at a four star restaurant.

These fashions are very flattering to most women, and I'm sure they'll do as well as they can given the economy (though, possibly, not the $1220 boots!). But will next years fashions reflect the fact that we can't pretend to be rich any longer? That, unlike the MadMen style that inspired many of these fashions, it is not the early 60's and we are not a super rich, superpower were newlyweds can move right into that sprawling ranch house, buy a new Cadillac, take up horseback riding and, yes, get a membership at the local country club.

Will fashion designers start to glorify simplicity and being inexpensive in the coming year?...maybe go very hippy with patches and a homemade look? Or will they continue on like this, trying, as fashions did in the Depression, to pretend that we still have money and can wear our slinky evening glows (tuxes for the guys) for a night out at the Ritz?

Boots! Oh, booooots!

I'm sorry, did you have a point?
Hey, I'm on the same page! I love boots and it's a banner year for them. I hope you have plenty of cash, though. They don't come cheap. And will you be able to manage them with, er, that passenger of yours there? Boots aren't easy to get on or off, especially when they start to get that tall.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm booooots
I should've known this would become a boot thread...one mention of that word on this forum and off it goes. We could probably derail every political thread here just by mentioning the word: "Boots" with a nice pic of a pair.....

Salvor, stop licking your way up Selena's over the knee boots!

I've been seeing a lot of boots lately... I never quite realized how much I like women wearing boots. Especially with a skirt.

Some people love women in summer fashion, I think winter fashion can be just as hot.

BTW, I like the one in the middle the most. The maroon curve hugging number. Although the one on the right is nice too. The left most is too busy for my taste and baggy.

*snerk* At 4'11" ALL boots come over my knees!
Ah, you know what I'm talking about then. With short legs there's not enough leg to show off the boot or for the boot to show off the leg! (that is, if you can get the boot zipped up. My legs are a bit chubby and few of those boots, meant for skinny legs, fit all that well) :D

Yeah, with no extra cash and the growing bump, the boots will be hard to do this year... *sigh*

But... there's always secondhand!! And hubby loves zipping up my boots for me... :D

Agreed. The busy look is that Twiggy fashion. Flared sleeves and such. You'll be happy to hear that I saw much more of the maroon fashion than I did of the busy fashion.

Like this for example:

Of course, there's also this weird 60's top/coat--boxy, half-sleeves, big buttons, and that weird collar-less collar--that never really looked good on anyone, not even Jackie:

Oh, and if we're talking boots, we might as well discuss gloves also. Gloves are also back in. Like I said, it's a good time to be a dominatrix....or a stripper.

Oh Gawd! I'm in love all over again. Boots, clingy knits, long straight hair . . .
You're a Diana Rigg Fan, ain't ya?

It's got that look of coming right out of a 007 movie. That's the secretary or second in command who says, "Right this way, Mr. Bond..." as she leads him through some ultra-high-tec instillation to meet with some boss or other.

Edited to add: I'm sorry I have to tell you this but...Catherine Malandrino Women's Cashmere Turtleneck Dress:
$575.00

I'm glad tights and dark stockings are back. Maybe they have been. I don't get out much. :D Anyway, I know they were out for a while.

Pretty nice.

But winter fashion? Poor things are gonna freeze to death anywhere where it's actually winter.

I think someone needs to test this theory.

Well, they'd be too hot in the summer, ergo Winter fashion.

Besides, I'm sure they have nice winter coats to go over these nice winter fashions.
