Sarah Palin

Why is no one calling into question McCain's ability to make good judgments because of the poor judgment he showed in choosing Palin? Probably because to assert that position, the media would have to conclude that the Palin decision was short-sighted and ill-informed. To do that, they'd have to, as Poehler-as-Clinton said, "grow a pair."

And before I'm attached as a stare-at-my-navel liberal (hey, at least no one's leveled "bleeding heart" yet), I am not. Action must be taken. Since energy was brought up, strong moves toward wind and solar need to be made, and to do that, incentives must be given to those who would develop them. But recently, McCain voted against continuing what meager incentives we were giving them. "Drill, baby, drill!" will only further our dependence on oil, and that means foreign oil. OPEC has got to be licking their chops, and you can bet their lobbyists are gearing up and the money's flowing to anything that'll get McCain elected. (Read Thomas Friedman's new book.)

I await intelligent replies.
The only rational for 'drill, baby, drill' is as a short term measure backed with medium and long term investment in the whole range of alternative energy and consumption reduction resources. That would require taxing domestic oil consumption punatively and no politician has 'the balls' to take that path. And before the Right starts its usual rant of 'leave it to industry', oil consumption has to been punitively expensive to make alternatives resources profitable for industrial investment. I'd rather that be achieved through taxation than invasion of oil rich territory.

I go back and forth on my thoughts about this.

At first I thought her selection was merely a ploy directed towards the female half of the United States.

"Obama didn't choose a woman VP, you liked Hillary, here ya go! Now shaddup!"

But I'm beginning to think she's a sacrificial distractionary lamb akin to Dan Quayle with Bush the first.

Create enough confusion, keep those tongues wagging about little things, and the country loses sight of the important big picture (pictures).

I don't believe McCain chose her in a maverick fashion. He does have many handlers. I think it was well-planned, seriously crafted.

It does make me grin to see McCain's strained face, though. Though not qualified to be president Palin is an intelligent woman with strong opinions. I picture the two of them in a room, heatedly discussing foreign or domestic policies.
It isn't pretty. :D

I just had a visual of that meeting:

"Sarah, help me log into this email thing"

"You just push this thingy here, John"

"What thingy, damn it"

"That thingy, ya idiot"

"Hey Sarah, whatda ya think about the stability of the Russian economy?"

"No problem. I'll keep an eye on it from my house"

When will he call her a cunt?

the hysteria over Palin is both hilarious and frightening simultaneously.
I wish conservatives could get a divorce from the liberals in this country and take half the country and live in it as we please...
I'd take ALASKA alone. Why? Energy "crisis" cut in 2 when we "drill our way out of the problem" while the LIBS gaze at their navels and contemplate wind power operating their vehicles.
Don't sweat it, buddy. You're probably going to get your wish.

And I believe that Palin being a woman was a secondary consideration. If she pulled in some other women that was cool but not the main reason for her selection.

The main reason was to solidify the support of people like semen here. The 'bedrock conservatives' who haven't been happy since they left the children out of the mines.

Those people were never happy with McCain and if they don't vote or back a third party he can't win.

I'm gonna sound all crunchy and woo-woo with this statement (like I care :) ) but what bothers me is where the attention is going. Sarah Palin has, for good or ill, the attention of the nation. With all this energy - whether it's positive or negative - headed in that direction, it can only spell bad things for her opponents.

And I'm no exception. It seems to be like a magnetic force... I'm so pulled in by the horror of it, I can't stop watching. And on the other side, they're so dazzled by the sunspots they can't see straight.

I have no idea how to stop the phenomenon. But it worries the hell out of me.

I can only hope George Will was right this morning: "We had the technology bubble, we had the housing bubble, now we have the Sarah Palin bubble."

When will it pop? All I can say is, I hope, soon.

First, let me say that my month and a half at Literotica have been a joy. There are nutjobs, but realize that on most discussion boards -- esp. ones geared more toward prurient interests, as this one is -- the nutjobs outnumber the smarties. This thread is 27 pages long and has not debilitated to stupid name-calling. I don't agree with y'all, but for the most part everyone's raised points worth considering.

So. Didja'll see the New York Times today? Here's a very telling article on Palin:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/us/politics/14palin.html?pagewanted=2&hp

NYT is fair, I think, and if they could find anything to equivocate about, they'd let you know. This woman is just . . . well, if you like "politics as usual," and you consider that to mean corrupt, she's your woman!

Peace, Doug

I agree, the attention on Palin takes our attention from "that man behin the curtain" we're not supposed to pay attention to. But once we establish that Palin was a horrible choice, then we can go after McCain for making that choice -- or allowing that choice to be made in his name, as I've heard is what happened.

Am I the only one who sees that both Hillary and Sarah are "ice queen" types? Ruthless and deadly. I'd sooner trust a rattlesnake than either. I doubt that I am alone in that impression of their character.

I agree, but I'm okay with ruthless and deadly. As long as you're being ruthless and deadly defending things I believe it. ;)

My experience is that ruthless and deadly people usually don't give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves. So they can never be on my side.

But that's so damned unfair, isn't it?

They are strong women.

Why does that make them ice queens?

I'm strong. You mess with my children and I'll crawl all the way up your ass.

That makes me less than a woman?

I trust it can be inferred from here that you don't find Obama, McCain, or Biden ruthless and deadly--or otherwise this would be a comment that I'd think over half the forum would be dropping on your head about as a sexist remark. And it's quite possible you don't. I don't find McCain or Biden either ruthless or deadly. Might find Biden that if I hadn't been in a position to see him closer up over the years. I'm not at all sure Obama isn't ruthless or deadly. Haven't seen it yet, but he's so new and so good in public.

A lot of Pailan's acquaintances have charactrized her that way. Will have to watch for a while to really make a judgment. But I haven't heard any of her supporters call her warm and fuzzy either. Clinton certainly comes across that way in large forums and has been characterized as that for years by her detractors. I've seen her in smaller groups where she seems a lot softer and a lot more colleagial and laid back. Who knows which is the real Clinton, though.

I do wonder if male candidates would be measured in quite the same terms, though.

Later: And after I posted this, I saw that other foot had fallen.

There is a difference between protective and evil. The implication that I was going for here was evil. A kind of dark, malevolent, inhuman quality to both Palin and Hillary, which I don't see in a Nancy Pelosi (no matter how much I dislike her for political reasons) or a Kay Bailey Hutchison.

For a woman to be protective is to be natural and instinctive. For her to be twisted, an "ice queen" like these women, is something entirely different. I just get this negative vibe that's hard to explain. It's primordial.
