Church's attack on pop-culture leads to controversy

BLACKLICK, Ohio - Mixed feelings. That's the best way to describe how people feel about a controversial church sign that was seen at a local parish this past week.

For 24 hours, the message board outside Havens Corners Church, 6696 Havens Corner Rd., read, "I kissed a girl and I liked it, then I went to Hell."

The message refers to the chart-topping song by pop artist Katy Perry "I Kissed A Girl."

Pastor David Allison said he didn't put up the sign to draw attention to the church.

"We didn't intend to get into all this, but it's become a bigger thing," Allison said.

He was just very concerned about the implications of the song for teenagers and what he called a music video so suggestive it borders on pornography.

"If anyone's seen the video and understands how lewd and suggestive the video is for this song, that is not something young people should go toward," Allison said.

He thought the message would be a loving way to remind teenagers that the Bible denounces homosexuality.

Taking a look at the other side of this story, some people can't believe the church displayed that message so publicly.

A viewer sent the local NBC affiliate a picture of the sign with the subject title "Worst Church Sign Ever."

The sign was removed Thursday.

Pastor Allison said it was not due to outrage. He said he received volumes of support from throughout the state.

Instead, he said, it was confusing to many people who called in or e-mailed because they didn't know to what he was referring. They were unaware of the song.

Equality Ohio said their "jaw dropped" when they saw a picture of the sign.

"It was a little jaw-dropping. But it happens and we want people to know there are more than 300 welcoming and affirming churches across Ohio," said Kim Welter, of Equality Ohio.

They maintain while the church is free to air their opinion on a reader board, members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community will find more than 300 welcoming churches throughout Ohio.

Allison said they do welcome the GLBT community but believe they are engaged in sin.

I wonder what they'd make of my 6 year old daughter wandering around singing it. :D

people do get thier knickers in a twist over the daftest things.

And here's a marvelous reply to people who like to spout off about what the Bible does and doesn't condemn.

heheheheh... nice, Gnome. I liked that one.

So since we are discussing the song... the line,"hope my boyfriend don't mind it..."

Is there a boyfriend who would mind it? We were having a lunchroom discussion just the other day, and it was the consensus there that none of the guys would mind it, and actually would tend to encourage it. The guys were aged 30 and under, and none were married. I'm also wondering if that makes a difference in their attitudes about it. Just interested in hearing thoughts.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

I can't speak for God, only myself.

But making a slave out of me will be a hideously expensive undertaking in time, money and lives.

I know someone, a felow AHer, other people might remember the thread, too. And he was asked by then girlfriend if she could snog this other girl, he said no. He wasn't too sure why, but I think that still counts. He's under thirty, too.

It says it's not available in my country. :(

Well that's silly!

It's by Katy Perry - called "I Kissed A Girl" and this video says (Official Video).

There are some parodies out there too, of course.

Any way you can search for it from your end?

EL - it was number 1 in the UK on downloads alone, the official single came out this week so you should be able to find it somewhere.

On the kissing girls/partner having issues thing, me and the fiance had a long discussion about it, and basically, no kissing girls, let alone doing anything else!

Evidently Pastor Allison's knowledge of the Bible is considerably less than his parishioners think. The only place homosexuality is genuinely condemned is in Leviticus and that section of the Torah was discarded as inapplicable to non-Jewish Christians by Saints James, Peter and Paul in the Council of Jerusalem as stated in the book of Acts. Stooopidhead!

No, just being human, VM.

He has his prejudices and like most human beings finds 'facts' to back him up.

But he's short-sighted as well. Rampant teenage homosexuality would go a long ways toward solving the teen pregnancy problem.:D

I keep wondering what about this video is so infinitely more offensive than the majority of hip hop videos out there.

Communism! I mean Lesbianism!

Which is pretty much the same thing in the minds of these wingnuts. ;)

Well, some people decide their idea of morality is right and everything else is wrong even if they don't really have the facts to back them up. Sad really.

Women aren't supposed to enjoy sex, yannow. (What religion is this?)

But girl kissing is fun.

;)
