To End or not to End

I just finished writing the 17th chapter of my ongoing series. I never had the whole thing planned out ahead of time, so I was never exactly sure how I was going to end the story.

The ending I wrote for this chapter could end the entire series. But, I feel a bit like the Karen Eiffel character (played wonderfully by Emma Thompson) in Stranger than Fiction. The ending is perfect, and heartbreaking, but I don't know if I can do it. Well, I'm deluding myself calling the ending perfect, but...

I just don't know if I have the stomach for it. Anyone else ever have that problem?

Yeah. I've never written an ending to ONE of my stories until this weekend. And you'll see that it's not a very ballsy one.

A friend of mine has been writing a story about some characters that he really likes, but their needs are such that they need to go to a really dark place. He's having trouble finishing the story because he likes these people too much to allow them to go where the story should take them.

Is that the sort of thing you mean?

I've already ended my series twice and now I am heading towards the third ending. I need to let it go but...

I know how you feel!

Yeah. I've never written an ending to ONE of my stories until this weekend. And you'll see that it's not a very ballsy one.

The initial problem was that I couldn't get around to ending the story. There was just too much story to tell, and I kept thinking of more and more story that needed to be added.

But the real problem is the darkness. There are also a lot of plot points I want to develop, but the real problem is that its a very dark ending. Actually the leftover plot points fit with how I've written the rest of the story.
