New York Bar/Club Age Limit?

I am visiting New York again in December, except this time with members of my family.

The main thing I need to find out right now, is what is the age limit for people to visit bars and clubs. I know it is 21 to drink alcohol, but can someone who is 19/20 still go into these places and not drink?

My parents are big jazz fans and are thinking of visiting the blue note jazz club, as well as some other jazz venues in the city. However my cousin is 19 and we want to go as a family to all of these places, so does anyone know if there will be problems getting in etc?

We also want to visit some nice bars too, and are just curious is this going to be strictly 21s too?

Any help or further advice on this would be hugely appreciated. We want to enjoy ourselves on this trip, and the last thing we want to have to do is decide on other places because of the age limits. My cousin wont be drinking anyway, but obviously some places could be quite funny about their laws and we dont want to goto a show and have to leave people at the appartment because they won't let people in..

Thanks for listening.

Depends on the spot. Some places are 18 to enter and 21 to drink. It's best to check out if the place you are going has a website and see what it says.

Also if you like jazz you should check out B.B. King Blues Club & Grill (www.bbkingblues.com/index.shtml).

it's true. but as far as I know most places would except you but you'd have to wear a bracelet or a special stamp if you're underage, most jazz clubs are just 18 though. if it's in december, you might want to check out Patrick Cornelius, he's awesome. http://www.patrickcornelius.com/

I live in New York State and I have never heard of a bar/club that will allow someone inside, who is under 21, "if" there is alcohol served there. What's to stop the family member from buying a drink and then passing it off to the underage person?

This is what I thought too.

I tried looking on the websites of the places we wanted to go, but none of them had any information for age limits. I have emailed them all too, but no reply. I emailed at the weekend and still nothing, hence the thread.

Bars and clubs I can understand with the age limit for 21 and over for the reasons lilsubangel said. I had a feeling this might be the same for jazz clubs too, but with a little more flexibility. However, the shows we want to see are at 10pm, which means the age restrictions may be more strict.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I live in NYC, an am under 21. There are quite a few places that have 18+ clubs, but with 21+ drinking (usually distinguished by a stamp or bracelet). Most really nice restaurants (like Keens Steakhouse, for example) or hotels ( The St. Regis famous bar, The King Cole Room, for example) don't card you to go sit at the bar. There are also plenty of places that have all ages shows. Most anyplace that also serves food isn't going to card.

I suggest that when you get here pick up a free Onion or Village Voice (available on just about every street corner in a newspaper box) as they have pretty decent weekly event listings in the back.

And for the record, I absolutely hate B.B. King Blues Club & Grill. Its ridiculously overpriced, the service is shit, and the venue is terrible for seeing bands... nowhere to stand and dance!

I know a lot about various places people under 21 can go to see bands, as well as a lot about really nice old historical restaurants and bars in the city, so if you have any more specific questions, feel free to PM me :)

I don't know much about jazz clubs though :/

EDIT: Also, there are a lot of places where early shows will be all ages or 18+ (or even if they are officially 21+ there is rarely a bouncer anywhere before 10pm) and then switch for the later show to 21+

:) I was hoping you would swing by.... Thank you for the heads up... The onion and village voice are on my list as soon as I get there, but I kind of needed to know in advance as I am sure some of my family may not want to come if there is gonna be hassle with her not being 21. I told her it should be ok, but it would ruin the trip if we turned up to places and she wasnt allowed in.

BB king's was not on my list. But Blue note definitely is.. That was the main one I needed to know about age, but the fuckers still havent emailed me.

As for other bars and restaurants.... If you can find the time, I would love to hear any that you can recommend which are also parent friendly too! (ie, not too busy or hectic). You can PM me if you want with those, esp any veggie friendly restaurants, or under 21 friendly bars :) ... lol..
