Anything liquid that that doesn't have alcohol.
I'm sick of the vanilla tube feed and orange juice. and I'm looking for recipe ideas.

Drinks Without Alcohol by Jane Brandt has 200 nonalcoholic recipes. I've made several and have enjoyed them. :)

overly ripe peaches (peeled), with fresh or frozen blueberries, vanilla yogurt, grape or cranberry juice, some sugar or sweetener, and ice- whirrrrrrrrrrr it up

We make smoothies everyday at my place. I have the bullet blender thing and it works great. I buy the big tubs of yogurt to make things creamy.

I had a long conversation with someone the other day about the Bullet. I kept telling her how MUCH I wanted to try it, and she was just RAVING about it, but with some really, REALLY weird stuff. I was confused, but intrigued. Turns out I was talking about the vibrator, and she was talking about the blender.

like anything from jamba juice? i used to work there so i know whats in most everything. it wouldn't be exactly the same, but i'm sure it'd be tasty

When Sir can't face food I blend full cream milk, ice cream, a raw egg and a sprinkle of nutmeg all together. It's nutritious and filling plus has the benefit of keeping His blood sugar level up (He's diabetic).

You should have seen my friend's face when I told her my mom gave me a Bullet for Xmas:D

I can imagine! I'm not sure I'd be able to contain myself if that was me. I hope you played along for awhile. "Well, my mother DID ask what I needed!"

I do a chocolate peanut butter protein shake. Simple and good, with simple being the more important part for me.

8oz low carb chocolate milk (I prefer Hood)
1/2 cup of cottage cheese
2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter

Blend smooth. Add two ice cubes if you want it more milkshake like.

You can also substitute a scoop of chocolate protein powder and 8oz of water for the chocolate milk, or use full carb chocolate milk if you don't mind the carbs. Some people prefer regular or organic peanut butter, but I like the natural stuff for the stronger peanut taste. It's less sweet too, which, for me, is a good thing as the chocolate milk is sweet enough as is. And, no, you won't taste the cottage cheese unless you're really sensitive to it.

Loads of protein in this, both whey and caseinated, and some EFA's from the peanut butter. You can add in flax powder for extra fibre and EFA's, but I'm personally sensitive to the taste of flax.

strawberry banana yogurt
one banana
about four strawberries
a little bit of orange juice
ice

feel free to change yogurt flavors and types of fruit

i had this for breakfast every morning last summer with whatever yogurt and fruit was available

I like coffee drinks. Healthy shit seems like a lot of trouble. But, hey, now coffee is healthy too, did ya hear?

:D

Watermelon, banana & a few strawberries. Add yogurt if you like creamy. Protein powder if you need it. Ice if you just want GOOD.

My son is trying to gain weight right now (cause his coach wants him to) but not having much luck. We've tried various protein powders and liquids. Does anyone know one that doesn't taste yucky???

Try different types, and I don't mean brands. Protein powders come from various sources, and the most common, whey, is one that some people just cannot abide the taste of. Whey, naturally, is fairly bitter and unpleasant, and companies go through a LOT to mask that taste. Other proteins do not have the same problem necessarly, but are not as cheap ans easy to work as whey is. Some are actually cheaper, but are not even close to the nutrient density and quality of whey.

Whey - from dairy, cheap, easy, not so great tasting, and fast absorbing. Whey is awesome for post workout

Caseinated protein - from dairy, this is a long lasting protein that is slow to digest. Very good for feeling full, and especially good for right before bed. If he is trying to gain weight, I strongly suggest some caseinated protein before bed. A cup of cottage cheese is a great, and fairly cheap, source.

Rice protein - harder to find, tolerable quality, not a complete protein insofar as amino acid profiles are concerned

Soy protein - very cheap, generally low quality protein, can have an unfavourable phytoestrogen profile for a boy trying to gain weight

Hemp protein - really good quality and bioavailability supposably, weak on actual grams of protein by bulk, expensive, and I'm not sure of the amino acid profile, so no idea if it is a complete protein or not.

As to brands that taste better, I personally like Muscle Milk. They've a wide array of flavours, and you can find a lot of pre-mixed single serving packs ready to drink in places like GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe. This allows you to test a flavour before you buy a whole tub. That's a big advantage. Muscle Milk also has a lot of additional vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. It's an excellent product.

Biotest's protein is supposed to taste good too. I've not tried it, but have tried other products by them.

Both Cytosports (the makers of Muscle Milk) and Biotest have weight gain formulas. Generally, the only difference between a weight gainer and a regular protein powder is the amount of carbs (usually sugar of some sort, sometimes better stuff like waxy maize) present in it.

If you want to talk weight gain in depth, PM me. I've had some experience helping people gain weight (muscle gain), and can get you a lot of solid info on that from various sports nutrition sources.

Muscle Milk is what we are using now. He finds it just barely tolerable. He's lost a lot of weight this summer from doing his sport in the sun for long hours. It started with sports camp, eight hours a day in the blistering heat.

I personally don't want him to gain too much weight but he could use some. His coach wants him to have some because, for a while there his stamina was shot.

However, now that it's fall he seems back on his game and ready to kill the competition. The question is, how can he stay there year around.

One issue is inhalent allergies that make it so he can't breathe too well and that too affects stamina.

Starting this week he will have a full schedule of practice, lessons, games, clinics or tournaments every day. I think he is ready for it.

Spring and summer were painful to watch though. Because of what HE wants, not because of what I want!

If Muscle Milk is barely tolerable, try some Cytogainer by the same company. The higher carb count may make it taste better. The downside of Muscle Milk is the EFA's. They come from safflower oil and other plant oils and, while really good, can produce an odd tinge of taste to the product for folks that are sensitive to the taste of those products.

I would give Biotest a shot. They only sell their protein direct, or at least did last time I checked. Their website is reliable, and I've never had a problem while ordering from them.

Weight gain and stamina really is a big deal. Mass helps quite a bit, as more muscle can store more creatin and glycogen, and fat stores are just energy waiting to be used in a properly functioning system.

The big key to proper weight gain is to eat like a horse, while getting a load of good exercise. Michael Phelps, to use an example, recently talked about how much he eats in a regular day, and his breakfast alone is more food than a lot of people eat in a full day. He does that both because he is constantly training and because he also has a problem keeping weight on.

I can't imagine eating like that. I remember trying to gain weight when I was a teen. It just wasn't going to happen. My son eats ALL the time though. He is MUCH more athletic that I ever dreamed of being.

I'll keep those products in mind when we are reading to try something new.

Thank you!

Your welcome. If you want recommendations on books, programs, websites, etc, it is a hobby of mine, so I can give you some good tips and sources. If he is specifically looking to gain weight for football, I can point you towards a very good three part article on doing just that.

Thanks! I might do that. His sport isn't football thank goodness!!

Yep, football is rough on that. Then again, wrestling is even worse, as they want you to gain weight, but then to lose it to make weight class, and so on ad nauseum.
