I find this interesting. I believe that the only reason you dislike calling it "porn" is because that title has a sense of "wrong" and "taboo."

Were we all raised with the rigid belief that looking at Porn is a sin and therefore we feel "guilty" even now becase... well... we like it?

Saying "Erotica" makes us feel better. It teases our consciences into believing that we are not looking at the wicked, sinful porn.

Pornographic: stories where people have sex. The sex is well described and detailed. The plot sometimes not so much.

Well, I'm already going to the 2nd level of Hell for my "lusty" behavior. Therefore, I'll call it porn, but if I ever told my mom, I'd say "erotic fiction" because she thinks sex is sinful.

It wasn't too long ago that writing about gay sex was considered wrong, taboo & pornographic. Now gay sex per se is viewed by many as just another manifestation of human sexuality.
Porn is the motivation of the writer/artist. Literotica is simply open to stories. It's not free of pornography nor does it appear to encourage it.

Sure, lead the way. Hahahah... really, you are cracking me up!

But, since I don't find it to be "porn" so much as "erotica" I can already say that I've visited it... and rather liked the views.

And, yes, for me it is the negative connotations that the word "porn" suggests... and there is a fine line between that and erotica... but to me they are separate. One I find to be distasteful (sometimes offensive to my senses/sensabilities) and the other, perfectly normal and sometimes even a delight. I also agree that since by definition, it is based on a person's tastes and opinions, that there will never be a final answer on the differences.

(But I still don't tell anyone I write erotica, porn, or smut, or that I willingly read it. Not so much that it is none of their business as it would embarrass the shit out of me. )

Wow. That's quite a loaded comment, iisn't it? Especially as you hardly know the poster to whom you're making judgments.

You bring your own background to this conversation, the thought that porn is a negative thing. But it's just your opinion. Your opinion is markedly different from mine, and perhaps many others here.

This topic, porn/erotica, has been discussed many times before in the Author's Hangout. Do a thread search and you'll see. It has been discussed with great seriousness, however this thread is not one of those.

Words, in themselves, have no value for me. Porn by any other name is still dirty stories. I enjoy writing them, and the certain amount of praise I receive for what I do. With a few exceptions, I write about the participants reveling in their sexuality, with nobody being hurt.

I call it porn, not erotica, because I don't consider it to be "Literature". I don't follow the supposed rules for writing "literature". I have no plot to speak of, no character development and no artistic value. I just write stroke.
