Some really bad writers on here.

Hey not all of the authors on lit hang out in here, I get lost sometimes and find myself here.

For real. I mean, have you read a published novel lately? It's like they're too cheap to get proofreaders.
Oh? I thought it was some new literary trend, like sentence fragments and quotes without quotation marks. :( Call me old-school, but I guess that's why I stick to reading older published fiction.

Welcome to the AH.

If you want to read good stories check out any of the people who hang here.
And conversely, don't expect the people who write more than one or two of the first-second POV stories to see your complaint in a forum frequented by people who want to improve their writing. :p

The writers you're complaining about generally don't hang out here in the forums or at least not in this forum.

One does not enter someones home and immediately criticize the decor'.

It's poor form, donchaknow.

There are all forms of writers here on Lit, from first timers to published. That is the beauty of this site. Everyone (within reason) gets a shot at seeing their story in print. Many go on to greater things, others fade into oblivion. But they all had that chance.

My first story was rejected twice because, frankly, I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Then some friendly authors here took me in hand and showed me the errors I was making.

All that being said, welcome to the AH. ;)

Remember; It takes a carpenter to build a barn, but any jackass can kick it down.

Some authors on Lit are still learning to drive nails. :catroar:

The poor English is easy to explain. Having a professional editor for Literotica stories is optional. To read stories published using proper English, one would have to buy a professionally published book or magazine. The other explanation involves the seemingly ever-decreasing quality of education these days...

You didn't just say that did you?

If you actually looked at the intensity and quality of education available for free, right now America is at the best it's ever been. We expect ALL kids to know more content and have more basic skills than ever before.

That's right, everyone. Not just the smart, motivated people. Everyone; fluent in English or not, learning disabled or not, citizen or not, gives a shit, or not. Get it? From your Rhode's Scholar to little homeless Jonny who is couch hopping in order to keep a roof over his head.

We're the only country that expects a level of education from EVERYONE. It's not the quality of education that seems to hamper us, it's the goal. Remember we have a lofty, if noble, goal.

:cattail:

Oh... Welcome, Rico.

I am new to lit, Been browsing stories but I keep hitting the same thing. Stories with stuff like

I run my hands up you shirt.
You let out a soft sigh.

My god is the story in first person or second person. Choose one and stick with it. Or maybe take the time to create a charachter. Takes a second to atleast pick a name. Lit may have thousands of stories but if there all like this you won't have many fans.

You sure stirred up a ruckus with this post, Rico. May I call you Rico? Okay, thanks.

Anyway, there are many talented authors here who probably started out not knowing much about writing, about verb tenses or first or second person point of views. I know I was one of those writers.

But, with a lot of tutelage from a few people here, finding a good editor and a good beta reader, I've managed to make a nice comfy niche for myself here. Sure, I'm not published beyond Literotica (or StoriesOnline) yet, but I do have a few things in the works to change that.

If you like the story, but can't seem to get past the writing style, grammar, switching POV, or whatever, send feedback to the author about what you don't like about his or her story. Don't be mean about it. Just say what you feel without being insulting. You'd be surprised at the response you get.

Sure, sometimes you'll get the occasional author who doesn't give a shit what their readers think, but for the majority of them, they are always looking to improve and get their name on one or more of the coveted top lists or favorite authors/stories page.

And, as it has been said on this thread a few times already, if you think you can do better, then do it. Don't sit there bitching about someone else's (in)ability to write.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Just sayin'.

I think it's hilarious that Zeb still has some errors in his corrected post

Hello and welcome to the AH. And I'm not one of the near human people. I'm a gene-spliced abomination of a farm animal ;)
I never said I was perfect. :p

Your example is written in first person declarative. The character "I" is talking to the character "you".

(Whether or not it's written well, is a whole other question!)

LOL - well, you are not an adventurous reader. Sounds to me like you read top-lists.

The dude's right, though, up until the end of the headline. There actually are a lot of crappy writers on Lit. Some are epically bad, without having to write 1st-person stuff.

But, I can take comfort. No one has insisted, or even requested, that I read every story on the site. Since I came to do illustrations and to write, I have read very few, maybe only hundreds. I don't know if there's a preponderance of crappy writers, even, and I am free never to know.

Welcome the the AH, Rico.

Flaming never makes for a good first impression.

(Now that's what I call a straight line.)

Hey! I happen to really like sentence fragments! :cathappy: However, everyone's right. Try reading the good stories here. Look for those little colored letters.

Look for those little colored letters.

Particularly the scarlet ones. I hear Hester went and got her's tattooed. Turns out Dimmesdale can't get into the mood without first being shamed by it.

What interests me is that none of you ever name the bad writers and never try to help them write better.

Key word: available. Too few people take advantage of that opportunity, and too many people accept mediocrity, then wonder why they don't get anywhere in life.

RICOLOUIS

I read a book every day. Something like 80% of what gets published is crap, for which I fault the editors, because they edit with the average dolt in mind. Ideas give dolts headaches. The average dolt knows 50 words, which is why most profanity are monosyllables.

True, 99% of the stories posted on LIT are awful. The writers with the highest ranking have lotsa friends and co-conspirators. There's no other explanation for the scores. Likewise, the herd dings everyone else.

What interests me is that none of you ever name the bad writers and never try to help them write better.

You're Wrong, CH. I've given up on trying to help, because I got seriously tired of "Dude, Lighten up, It's just a porn story" responses to constructive criticism and offers to help.

If you actually looked at the intensity and quality of education available for free, right now America is at the best it's ever been. We expect ALL kids to know more content and have more basic skills than ever before.

As the product of the 1960's educational system, the parent of two graduates of the 1990's educational system and the grandparent of two still in school (both in magnet programs,) I disgree with your assertion that American Education "is at the best it's ever been."

You're especially wrong when it comes to language arts like spelling, grammar and composition. The evidence is here at Lit in the first submissions of almost every author and the continued submissions of the 'its only porn' authors, but the decline in language/communication skills also apparent in the daily newscasts, the movies, and in the products of major publishing company imprints -- like TOR, Baen Books, Signet, Bantam, Dell, Del Rey, et al.

Nearly every book I've purchased in the last fifteen years contains errors characteristic of either MS Word or Wordperfect's spell checkers being trusted to make automatic corrections and of excessive trust in spell checkers (non-exisistent) ability to find homonyms and misused words.

Spell checkers are useless if people can't spell well enough to get the first few letters correct.

The information being presented to students is an ever increasing smorgasbord of information, but the little details like the ability to communicate precisely at need or make change without a cash register to do the simple arithmetic for you -- along with many other "life skills" are nearly completely overlooked in grades K-12.
