I'm about 6K words into a novella that's centered around karaoke night in a dyke bar, and my protagonist had a song all picked out for her opening number -- then she accidentally got locked out in the rain. By the time she talks her way back into the club, she's a soaked mess.

I want her to change her selection to play off her bedraggled appearance. It can't be too obscure, but I don't want it to be too common, either.

Suggestions, please?

Listening on YouTube now. :)

ETA: Okay, a little too techno, not enough "overcoming the obstacles" lyrics, and not strong enough on the vocals to highlight her voice. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

The old BJ THOMAS song, RAINDROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY HEAD.

Or the old DEE CLARK hit RAINDROPS

OK Dear, How about, "I used to kiss her on the lips, but it's all over now."
DG :D

How about 'Purple Rain'

or "Love, Reign O'er Me' by The Who

I keep thinking of that Travis song 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?', but that one is probably too obscure.

Depending on what mood your'e shooting for - Who'll Stop The Rain

Then there's Purple Rain by Prince, but I couldn't get the Youtube sound to work.

ETA: Oops, that's what I get for not reading the last post!

How about something funky and humorous, especially given the context of being rain-soaked and also perhaps looking for a date (main reason to go to a bar like that, right?):

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."

:D

Artist: Rupert Holmes
Song: Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

Question: what does come to the mind of other litizens when that sentence is said.

I got a very literal image on my hair, eh, head.

:D

Maharat

Classic musicals. This is from Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific but it triggers memories of older classics including Porgie and Bess ("Summertime") and Showboat ("Old Man River"). I know, I'm weird. :D

How about an old Memphis classic that has been covered by several artists?

I Can't Stand The Rain by Ann Peebles.

:)
