What's your opinion?

I was thinking about this and at first I though it must be rape, because rape involves forcing your individuality on someone else and violating their body: consumption and pain.

But then I decided that rape is evil, but it's not that obscene. To be obscene, something has to be shameful or humiliating, and rape isn't humiliating to the rapist.

I think, therefore, the most obscene act in the world might be surrendering your identity to a lover, totally giving yourself away to them. This doesn't sound so bad until you start thinking up examples of it: letting yourself be abused for love, for example, or humiliated and degraded. Scat play or bestiality (presumably someone engages in bestiality to please a third party), things like that.

But then I thought about pedophilia, and that's pretty obscene too.

So what do you think? What stories of yours are considered the most obscene? What stories have you read struck you as particularly obscene?

I share Robert A. Heinlein's opinion. "Of all the crimes human beings have legislated out of nothing blasphemy is the most amazing, with obscenity and indecent exposure fighting it out for second and third place.

i don't quite understand the question. it seems to be asking about the most 'obscene act', i.e. a sexual act that is mostly highly objectionable and offensive.

however you rule out rape, since the rapist isn't humiliated. yet you propose pedophilia, against which the same objection applies.

if you mean the most objectionable act, generally, i'd say it's the torture and murder of someone. if you mean the most objectionable sexual or sex related act, i'd say it's one [of several] involving their penetration in course of their being tortured and murdered.

if you simply mean, 'offensive to the average person' but involving no substantial harm, that's a different matter. probably our writing stories for people to jerk off to would be high on most person's lists!

My wife has been attending the annual UN conference on the status of women for several years. She returns with tales of unimaginable horror -- tales that have darkened the Eden Series.

There are things going on right now, on this planet, that can scarcely be believed. Female Genital Mutilation -- often involving removal of the clitoris -- is quite common in Africa (you can read a gut wrenchingf account of a young girl whose virginity is secured by a padlock in one such ceremony in Norah's Story).

But for me, the most horrifying, obscene accounts aren't of things happening in Africa, or Southeast Asia, but RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. Look at this link, if you dare, and gaze into the heart of darkness, the pit of unspeakable evil. And it's happening right under our noses. The last time I did a search on this I even came up with a triumphant post about how some of the perpetrators had been exonerated because the witnesses against them were "unreliable".

There is one incident here (and I really cannot describe it fully on Lit!) that has haunted me as the "most obscene". Let me just say that it involves a dog. Perhaps to work it out, there is a horrifying variation of it in A Goddess in Eden (again, not an excerpt that I could post on Lit!).

This seems to be a moral question, and I don't think I have my finger on the pulse of morality per se, nor do I think anyone else does, as a matter of fact. I can only speak for myself, and I don't think that really offers any useful insight into the question of obscenity.

I assume you're speaking only of sexual obscenity. That would seem to be leading to a question of the form: What's the most deviant thing you can think of that still turns you on? Because if it doesn't still turn you on, then it's not sexual any more, it's just torture.

I am not going to follow your link, but I have to ask what exactly you are talking about and what exactly you think is going on?

I think Og's comment does a good job of covering it for me, too. I'm sure there *ARE* things that are worse, but, y'know, I really don't need to know things that I wish I didn't.

Years ago, a friend of mine was the project manager for a CD on serial killers. It had histories, bios, sound bites, photos, interviews, letters, and things like that. When she was done, she took a few days off. She said she learned things doing this that she never knew existed, that she never wanted to know, and that a person could go their entire lives without ever needing to know. It wasn't good.

Most obscene things mentioned hear and in WR's links are not obscene, they are evil and depraved. All most anything involving pain of a magnitude that leaves permanent scars, physical and emotional, is nothing less than evil personified. IMHO.

Bestiality, that's is usually a choice by the individual unless they are forced to do the act, then it's back to evil and depraved again.

Anything where the person preforming the act has no say is torture and thus evil and depraved. IMHO.

Personally, watching a woman use a beer bottle, large end first, as a dildo is obscene. But that's just me.

IMHO there is a big difference between obscene and evil. Child abuse is not obscene it's evil, just about as evil as you can get. It's even, IMHO, more evil then murder, unless that murder is of a child.

Child abusers should be thrown in the deepest hole we can dig and left there. Those that kill children should be in that same hole. There is no call to abuse a child for any reason. Spanking,with your hand, is not child abuse unless it leaves bruises or the child is so young it doesn't understand.

I think that's an important distinction you're making, Zeb. Things can be evil without being obscene and vice versa. For that matter, there's plenty of really filthy stuff that might well have a shot at being 'obscene' without being evil and, in fact, being really fun.

And really, I am not sure what "Obscene" means to me. I'm not willing to make a judgement that way. There are sexual acts that I think are distasteful, and there are sexual acts that I find disturbing, and there are acts that don't turn me on at all-- but it's pretty obvious they turn someone on. And I'm all for that.

And then there are sexual perversions that disturb me and are complete turnons at the same time... I suppose those might be considered, by my self, obscene. Probably by most other people as well.

I am not going to follow your link, but I have to ask what exactly you are talking about and what exactly you think is going on?

Well -- it is a link to an organization that was reporting to the UN Conference on the Status of Women -- so it is not a scam or spam (actually I would rest easier if I thought it was all fiction).

And what it is describing is a culture of systematic abuse of women and children that has been going on, it would appear, for many generations.

I think that there is a basic flaw in your proposition. If something is obscene it cannot to my mind be more obscene. The idea of a gradation of obscenity is perhaps flawed ?
