Anybody else seen this? Just saw a commercial for it this morning for the first time. This guy says he's been an oil man all his life but more oil drilling is not going to help the US. Says we need to work on wind power, solar power and natural gas. What do you think? You can see it here...

My initial response is the same as Pellso27's. Going beyond the circular "we should" and actually slapping down a plan and money to start implementing something. Don't know if this is the best direction (although it might be--and probably is at least a help), but at least it's moving off the dime.

Wind, solar, and natural gas won't get us there.

Go Nuclear! Seriously.

I think its a terrific plan and will help move the United States away from it's heavy dependence on foreign oil to being more energy independent.

That's part of what I'm curious about. How much is he willing to get the ball rolling with investment himself and what can he get his pals to do?

Can't claim to have looked at it too well and my impression is that he's quite conservative and can be a screwball at times. But my impression also is that he puts his money where his mouth is, and so, on the surface, if he wants to at least help starting to get us diversified, I'll not pooh pooh the efforts. It's sort of like Ted Turner or Bill Gates dropping loads of money on something that at least will help one or two facets of a huge problem--when there's probably not a single-shot golden bullet out there for any of these issues.

I don't think "the" answer is either oil, solar, wind, or nuclear (or conservation, for that matter)--but probably a balance of all of them.

I would tend to agree. Diversity of resources is necessary. No matter what we do, carbon based energy is going to run out one day. However, in the meantime, another thing I haven't heard much about is more oil refining capacity. Someone suggested to me that drilling for oil wouldn't do any good without more refining capacity in the country. Yet, I hear people talking about drilling for oil without talking about increasing refining capacity.

Can't see the end game... even Pickens doesn't have that sort of wealth.

Surprised no one has mention the US announcement this week, a 20 fold increase in photo-voltaic cell efficiency. It actually reduces the number of cells required by a factor of twenty to create the same level of energy output by redirecting the light to the edge of the frame, can be used as glass curtain walling and should be on the market in 3 years.

Haven't seen it yet. Link to any info?

The fun thing on the clarion call to drill more oil is that no one's listening to those pointing out that there are licenses approved to drill more oil in Utah already that aren't being used (presumably because those who want to drill in Alaska see an opening in getting public opinion behind that). And, yes (A) oil drilled now isn't going to hit the market for some time and oil drilled in a future Alaska scenario wouldn't hit the market for a decade or more, and (B) we haven't put in a new oil refinery in 30 years (they are into a decades-long fight on the next one anywhere close to being started--in Arizona, I think; and we have existing oil refining operations knocked out occasionally by mother nature).

Our problem isn't the availability of oil resources (yet)--the United States is sitting on a large supply of unused oil. Our problem is (A) our policy is to use everyone else's oil first and everyone else has awakened to needing to maximize the benefit of their own resources, (B) there are new oil markets out there outbidding us for foreign oil--China and India, and (C) we're awfully dumb (with our automakers being the prize dummies) about switching to new sources of energy in a timely manner.

Alternative energy will help where its cost-effective to use it. I mean, there are places on Earth with plenty of sunshine, wind, and water energy.

The problem, as it always is, is SHYSTER ENERGY bribes politicians to buy its expensive crap that doesnt work. Then the government bribes SHYSTER ENERGY to go away, and hires CHARLATAN INC to fix the problems. CHARLATAN INC siphons a few hundred million for doing nuthin, and is fired, too. This goes on for about 10 years until engineers discover the whole shootin match is about to disintegrate from corrosion. By then SHYSTER ENERGY is back with a new name.

Read ATLAS SHRUGGED.

Precisely. Run the numbers and it becomes clear. Solar in deserts has some promise but wind is a joke. Only nukes can genuinely provide the magnitudes of energy the peoples of the world need to enjoy the comforts, conveniences and broadened horizons that industrial civilization make possible. Boone's op-ed was an embarassment - he should stick to what he knows.

Actually, that's probably a pretty accurate assessment.

Actually, I meant drop some nukes on the middle east and then go in and take all the oil we need. :D

Well, I guess even some one as nuts as Ayn Rand had to get it right once in a while. ;)
