World Community Grid. You donate spare computer time to the grid and it is used to calculate solutions to problems like finding treatments for HIV or cancer, to find more nutritious rice for third world countries - that kind of thing. The software runs in the background. You can run it as a screen saver or dedicate more resources to the computing. You can tell it to run only when you aren't using the computer, or to use a certain portion of your computer resources. It is up to you.

Yup every couple of months or so this gets mentioned. Been running the program for a couple years now, myself. Also ran the SETI project for almost 10yrs now. Rather worthwhile and doesn't seem to affect computer performance.

It doesn't? I've had so much trouble in the last couple of months with malware I'm seriously reluctant to let anything near my computer.

Malware can seriously affect the performance of your computer because the people who write and load it on your computer don't give a shit whether it loads down your computer or not. With grid computing, especially with BOINC, you have total control over how it uses the spare computing resources. You control when it runs and you control how much power it uses.

Yup you can set it to run just when the computer is in screen saver mode [even comes with its own screen savers for each project to show you the progress]
