Dedicate a song or poem (yours or anyone else's) to someone in this thread.

Feel free to post lyrics, poetry, links to YouTube, whatever moves you in your dedication.

I'll start with one for eagleyez. The first time we ever talked on the phone, he picked up his guitar and sang this to me. It has been our song ever since.

Comes A Time
Neil Young

Comes a time
when you're driftin'
Comes a time
when you settle down
Comes a light
feelin's liftin'
Lift that baby
right up off the ground.

Oh, this old world
keeps spinning round
It's a wonder tall trees
ain't layin' down
There comes a time.

You and I we were captured
We took our souls
and we flew away
We were right
we were giving
That's how we kept
what we gave away.

Oh, this old world
keeps spinning round
It's a wonder tall trees
ain't layin' down
There comes a time.

That's great! I never saw it before.

One more. One of my favorite Lou songs. Pure poetry.

Andy's Chest

If I could be anything in the world that flew
I would be a bat and come swooping after you
And if the last time you were here, things were a bit askew
Well, you know what happens after dark
When rattlesnakes loose their skins and their hearts
And all the missionaries loose their bark
All the trees are calling after you
And all the venom snipers after you
Are all the mountains boulder after you

If I could be anything of the things in this world that bite
Instead of being a tethered ocelot on a leash
I'd rather be your kite
And be tied to the end of your string
And flying in the air, babe, at night
Because you know what they say about honey bears
When you shave off all their baby hair
You've got a hairy minded big bare bear
And all the bells are rolling out for you
And stones are all erupting out for you
And all the cheap bloodsuckers are flying after you

Yesterday, Daisy Mae and Biff were grooving down the street
And just like in a movie, her hands became her feet
Her belly button was her mouth
Which meant she tasted what she'd speak
But the funny thing is what happened to her nose
It grew until it reached all of her toes
Now, when people say her feet smell, they mean her nose
And curtains laced with diamonds, dear, for you
And kingdom's Christian sailors (soldiers), dear, for you
And melting ice cap mountains, dear, for you
And knights in flaming silver robes for you
And bats, that with a kiss turn prince for you
Swoop, swoop, oh, baby, rock, rock

my all-time favorite. dark, but wonderful. i love berlin.

They're taking her children away
because they said she was not a good mother
They're taking her children away
because she was making it with sisters and brothers
And everyone else, all of the others
like cheap officers who would
stand there and flirt in front of me

They're taking her children away
because they said she was not a good mother
They're taking her children away
because of the things that they heard she had done
The black Air Force sergeant was not the first one
and all of the drugs she took, every one, every one

And I am the Water Boy, the real game's not over here
But my heart is overflowin' anyway
I'm just a tired man, no words to say
But since she lost her daughter
It's her eyes that fill with water
And I am much happier this way

They're taking her children away
because they said she was not a good mother
They're taking her children away
because number one was the girl friend from Paris
The things that they did, ah, they didn't have to ask us
and then the Welshman from India, who came here to stay

They're taking her children away
because they said she was not a good mother
They're taking her children away
because of the things she did in the streets
In the alleys and bars, no she couldn't be beat
that miserable rotten slut couldn't turn, anyone away

I am the Water Boy, the real game's not over here
But my heart is overflowin' anyway
I'm just a tired man, no words to say
But since she lost her daughter
It's her eyes that fill with water
And I am much happier this way

Well duh. The lyric is fucking brilliant. We have good taste!

most of his are. and damn right.

one more: waves of fear

Waves of fear, attack in the night
waves if revulsion, sickening sights
My heart's nearly bursting, my chest's choking tight

Waves of fear, waves of fear

Waves of fear, squat on the floor
looking for some pill, the liquor is gone
Blood drips from my nose, I can barely breathe
waves of fear, I'm too scared to leave

Waves of fear, waves of fear
waves of fear, waves of fear

I'm too afraid to use the phone
I'm too afraid to put the light on
I'm so afraid I've lost control
I'm suffocating without a word

Crazy with sweat, spittle on my jaw
what's that funny noise, what's that on the floor
Waves of fear, pulsing with death
I curse my tremors, I jump at my own step
I cringe at my terror, I hate my own smell
I know where I must be, I must be in hell

Waves of fear, waves of fear
waves of fear, waves of fear

This is my all-time favorite Lou song. I'm pretty cynical, too. Sweet but very cynical.

Busload of Faith

You can't depend on your family
You can't depend on your friends
You can't depend on a beginning
You can't depend on an end

You can't depend on intelligence
Ooohhh, you can't depend on god
You can only depend on one thing
You need a busload of faith to get by,
watch it baby

Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
You need a busload of faith to get by

You can depend on the worst always happening
You can depend on a murderer's drive
You can bet that if he rapes somebody
There'll be no trouble having a child

You can bet that if she aborts it
Pro-lifers will attack her with rage
You can depend on the worst always happening
You need a busload of faith to get by,
yeah

Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by, baby
Busload of faith to get by

You can't depend on the goodly hearted
The goodly hearted made lampshades and soap
You can't depend on the sacrament
No father, no holy ghost

You can't depend on any churches
Unless there's real estate you want to buy
You can't depend on a lot of things
You need a busload of faith to get by,
woh

Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by

You can't depend on no miracle
You can't depend on the air
You can't depend on a wise man
You can't find em because they're not there

You can depend on cruelty
Crudity of thought and sound
You can depend on the worst always happening
You need a busload of faith to get by,
ha

Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by
Busload of faith to get by

it's good to be cynical.

the power of positive drinking

Some like wine and some like hops
but what I really love is my scotch
It's the power, the power of positive drinking

Some people ruin their drinks with ice
and then they, they ask you for advice
They tell you, I've never told anyone else before

They say, Candy is dandy but liquor makes quipsters
and I don't like mixers, or sippers or sob sisters
You know, you have to be real careful where you sit down
in a bar these days

And then some people drink to unleash their libidos
and other people drink to prop up their egos
It's my burdon, man, people say
I have the kind of face you can trust

The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive drinking
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
the pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
the pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive drinking

Some people say, alcohol makes you less lucid
and think that's true if you're kind of stupid
I'm not that kind that get's himself burned twice

And some say liquor kills the cells in your head
and for that matter so does getting out of bed
When I exit, I'll go out gracefully, shot in my hand

The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive drinking
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
The pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
the pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive
the pow-pow-pow-pow-power of positive drinking

For the Crowd at the Bistro

Downstairs at Danny's All Star Joint
They got a juke box that goes doyt-doyt
The vice is nice they stay in the back all day
But when the nighttime comes, hey hey
There's this cat down there
that makes a bad kinda soup
I come around struttin' my luck in my shoop coupe
Cecil gives me coffee
And he won't never take my coin
I say "I got thirty dollars in my pocket
Watchoo doin'?"

I holler "Come on Cecil take a dollar
Come on Cecil take a ten
I've finally geared up into a whole buncha big ones
And you're acting like I'm down-shifting."

He knows all the under-riders on the boulevard
They got to barefoot cruise when it's forty-weight hard
They look particularly dead-beat
Permanently pale
Cecil picks up his butcher knife and
Waves it at the jail
The kid say "I ain't git no dough, Joe
I just want some O.J."
I say "Don't look at me." (Cuz he was lookin' my way)
Cecil wink upon him some juice and some green
And the kid walks over and puts the quarter in the pinball-machine

And he says "Come on Cec gimme a dollar
Come on Cecil gimme five
I'm in a half-way house on a one-way street
And I'm a quarter past left alive"

He can talk about your people in a wonderfull way
He can talk about your people 'till your hair turns grey
Your sister's into mustard
She loves to walk the pub
She likes the pickles and the relish
she never gets enough
A Hershey milkshake steamin' on a stick
For a Card Blanché sandwich
Oh, lettuce get thick
It's not because I'm dirty
It's not because I'm clean
It's not because I kiss the boys behind the magazine
Hey boys? How 'bout a fight?
Cuz here comes Rickie with the girdle on tight
And if she don't know your name
She knows what you got
From Your matzo balls
To the chicken-in-the-pot
chicken-in-the-pot
chicken-in-the-pot

Downstairs at Danny's All Star Joint
They got a juke box that goes doyt-doyt
A finger-snappin' deluxe
Make your be-bop bap
And your R&B hep-scat

You can't break the rules until you know how to play the game
But if you just want to have a little fun
You can mention my name
Keep your feet in the street
Your toes in the lawn
But keep your business in your pocket
This is it were it belongs

Come on Cecil, take a dollar
Come on Cecil, take a tip
Do yourself a favor
If she offers it - take it
But honey, don't give it away if he don't appreciate it

Sassynycism

dedicated to the cynics in Rhymeville
(cuz what NYers do best is cynicism, bagels and pizza. Ange already has the latter sewn up)

some like sugar in their bowl
i like gin in my glass
bump into me one mo' 'gain
Jack, i promise your ass is grass
just keep the music flowin'
and my tumbler on full
don't brush up too close
and everything'll be cool
just came to have a taste
unwind after a long day
shake my groove thang
but on the dance floor
is where you'll stay
don't wanna be your friend
not tryin' to be your lover
just lookin' to fill my dance card
you can take a number

Spirit in the Night

Crazy Janey and her mission man were back in the alley tradin' hands
`long came Wild Billy with his friend G-man all duded up for Saturday night
Well Billy slammed on his coaster brakes and said anybody wanna go on up to Greasy Lake
It's about a mile down on the dark side of route eighty-eight
I got a bottle of rose so let's try it
We'll pick up Hazy Davy and Killer Joe and I'll take you all out to where the gypsy angels go
They're built like light
and they dance like spirits in the night (all night) in the night (all night)
Oh, you don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night (all night), in the night (all night)
Stand right up now and let it shoot through you

Well now Wild young Billy was a crazy cat and he shook some dust out of his coonskin cap.
He said, "Trust some of this it'll show you where you're at, or at least it'll help you really feel it"
By the time we made it up to Greasy Lake I had my head out the window and Janey's fingers were in the cake
I think I really dug her `cause I was too loose to fake
I said, "I'm hurt." She said, "Honey let me heal it".
And we danced all night to a soul fairy band
and she kissed me just right like only a lonely angel can
She felt so nice, just as soft as a spirit in the night (all night)
In the night (all night). Janey don't know what she do to you
Like a spirit in the night (all night), in the night (all night)
Stand right up and let her shoot through me.

Now the night was bright and the stars threw light on Billy and Davy
dancin' in the moonlight
They were down near the water in a stone mud fight
Killer Joe gone passed out on the lawn
Well now Hazy Davy got really hurt, he ran into the lake in just his socks and a shirt
Me and Crazy Janey was makin' love in the dirt singin' our birthday songs
Janey said it was time to go
So we closed our eyes and said goodbye to gypsy angel row, felt so right
Together we moved like spirits in the night, all night
Baby don't know what they can do to you
Spirits in the night, all night
Stand right up and let it shoot right through you

For you!! Teach Your Children. And you know why!

You, who are on the road
Must have a code
That you can live by
And so
Become yourself
Because the past
Is just a good-bye
Teach you children well
Your father's hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you

And give of tender years
Can't know the fears
That your elders grew by
And so please help
Them with your belief
They seek the turf
Before they can die
Teach your parents well
The childrens hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you

Back atcha , babe....for my joisey girl and her beau. (Not the best quality video, but check out the love and adulation)

Rosey girl

You remember how much I love that song, don't you? ;)

I've probably seen him live more than any other band. And I'm always convinved he's singing this to me:

Jersey Girl

When he plays Jersey and sings "Down the shore everything's alright" the whole crowd sings with with.

EE sings it to me. Le Sigh.

Thank you sweetheart. I try. No subterfuge for me, just love.

This song makes me think of you.

I don't really know anyone here well enough, ( yeah, after 7 years, lol) to dedicate this particular song, so I will post the lyrics and say, it is my own personal theme song.

Charlie Daniels, Long Haired Country Boy

Artist: Daniels Charlie
Song: Long Haired Country Boy
Album: The Essential Charlie Daniels Band
Charlie Daniels Sheet Music
Charlie Daniels CDs

People say I'm no good
I'm crazy as a loon
'cause I get stoned in the morning,
I get drunk in the afternoon.
Kinda like my old blue tick hound
I like to lay around in the shade.
And I ain't got no money
but I damn sure got it made.
'Cause I ain't askin' nobody for nothin'
if I can't get it on my own.
If you don't like the way I'm livin'
You just leave this long haired country boy alone.

Preacher man talking on TV,
puttin' down the rock and roll.
Wants me to send a donation
'cause he's worried about my soul.
He said, "Jesus walked on the water."
And I know that it's true.
But sometimes I think that preacher man
would like to do a little walking too.
But I ain't asking nobody for nothin'
if I can't get it on my own.
If you don't like the way I'm livin'
you just leave this long haired country boy alone.

A poor girl wants to marry
a rich girl wants to flirt.
A rich man goes to college
a poor man goes to work.
A drunkard wants another drink of wine,
and a politician wants your vote.
I don't want much of nothing at all,
but I will take another toke.
'Cause I ain't asking nobody for nothin'
if I can't get it on my own.
If you don't like the way I'm livin'
you just leave this long haired country boy alone.

It's been so long since I've really been here, and I don't know how much longer I will be. (this puter sucks the big one- nothing works!! aarrrggghhhhh!!) But I've been wanting to say something like this for a long time.

This is especially dedicated to Ange for poking and prodding me and surviving it, but it's also to all the rest of you who have been so generous w/ your time and expertise.

Beautiful People
Melanie Safka

*You live in the same world as I do
But somehow I never noticed
You before today
I'm ashamed to say

Beautiful people
We share the same back door
And it isn't right
We never met before
But then
We may never meet again
If I weren't afraid you'd laugh at me
I would run and take all your hands
And I'd gather everyone together for a day
And when we gather'd
I'll pass buttons out that say
Beautiful people
Then you'd never have to be alone
'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
Include him in everything you do.

Beautiful people
You ride the same subway
As I do ev'ry morning
That's got to tell you something
We've got so much in common
I go the same direction that you do
So if you take care of me
Maybe I'll take care of you

Beautiful people
You look like friends of mine
And it's about time
That someone said it here and now
I make a vow that some time, somehow
I'll have a meeting
Invite ev'ryone you know
I'll pass out buttons to
The ones who come to show
Beautiful people
Never have to be alone
'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
Include him in ev'rything you do
He may be sitting right next to you
He may be beautiful people too
And if you take care of him
Maybe I'll take care of you
And if you take care of him
Maybe I'll take care of you...

* Not true- I have noticed all of you but you get the idea.

I know you know that was Jerry on the pedal steel in the original, right?

No! I never knew he played with her. I know she riffs with a lot of jazzers in her music, but not about him. Thank you, my bro.
