computer woes, once again

I fried the motherboard on my desktop. Everything's on that harddrive, too, damn it.

I'm pissed.

Thanks to one who wants to remain anonymous, I have a laptop, but....damn. :(

What the hell are you writing that's so hot it fries transistors? :D

If only the motherboard is gone, you can probably get a decent replacement for under $50.

At least it's not your hard drive that fried. I did that to an external back in April that had a lot of my life on it and it's gonna be over $800 to recover the data. I've been pulling down some overtime hours to take care of that, but still, that's over 3/4 the total bones on a new MacBook!

I feel your pain... (not your wasp-related one, but you know!)

I've found these folks to be pretty knowledgeable and good to deal with. If you determine that it is your motherboard, you can probably find a replacement here for a reasonable price.

Good luck :rose:

I think I've talked the husband into just buying me a new computer, since I was steadily having to replace everything bit by bit on the one I have.

Try price grabber.com you can still find new computers with XP. You do not want Vista :(

Crim's idea about the IDE to USB cable is correct. it will allow you to move all your files to the new machine.

at this point, darlin', one that works is the only real requirement I have.

*sigh*

Vista and the new version of office really suck. I always suggest XP and Open Office. Then again I really prefer Linux. :D

I don't have the new version of Office, but I have Vista on the desktop, and I hate it. I can't get the laptop (XP) to network with it so I can print from the laptop and any game that I've installed so far will only work on the administrator profile and not on any of the others (it puts the shortcuts on their desktops and in their start menu under program files but will not work when you click on them. It says shortcut missing or some such nonsense.)

Woah, bud, before you go there, does the hard drive at least spin up?

I have a rock solid hard drive recovery program that will dig that data up, if the drive at least spins up.

Due to backlash, Windows XP will be available for years from what I read. At least until 2010 when Windows 7 comes out.

I have an XP disk, so I can always reformat whatever I get, no problem.

Before you reformat a Vista box make sure there are XP drivers for all the hardware. I have had this problem on laptops and hope there is less trouble on desktops.

It took me a few days to get used to it, but I don't mind Vista at all. It's on both of our computers.

I wouldn't mind it either if I could figure out the game issue.

The user that you want to run the game has to admin rights or be in the admin group. I'll have to ask my son, I know he had the same problem but worked it out. Too bad we're not talking right at the moment.

Well, that's incredibly stupid. How many kids are you going to give admin access to?

That is a problem...have you upgraded Vista to SP1 yet...I think I remember that it fixed the problem you are talking about. Other than that I try to stay away from Vista as much as possible.

And MS Office 2007 isn't all that bad once you get used to it, they did take away the standard menus and such but hell I never used the menus anyway except the ones on the right mouse button click.

Don't have much advice to offer, except wishing you get things straightened out soon. 'Puter problems suck, when we depend so much on them.

Probably not. I only use that computer if I need to print something or if I want to play the Sims2, and it's set not to automatically download. I'll go upstairs later and see what needs to be upgraded on it.

Have you tried creating new shortcuts?
