Why I can't help but love people and My Bar, chapter 37.

Many people, including a few of those I love, have walked into My Bar and copped an immediate attitude about it. Not everyone in there has graduated from high school, has worn a suit to anything but a funeral or a wedding, has his or her own teeth, uses proper grammar, or drinks something more sophisticated than Bud Lite. It's easy for people Like Us to get all elitist in a place like that.

But these people teach me and surprise me, and last night was no exception.

Picture Hawk, the Mid-40's, rode-hard, Obnoxiously Drunk Redneck Guy. Thin, loud, overly friendly, feed cap, sleeveless and half-destroyed Molly Hatchett concert Tshirt. Works for the city doing landscaping and tree-cutting. Easy to dismiss, right? Nothing to teach.

So I end up talking to him, of course, and we're talking about B-rad's hair, which he's just cut nearly off except for a mohawk strip in the middle. B-rad is too old, too white and too regular for a cut like that. I tell him jokingly that I don't approve of short hair on men. Drunk Redneck guy says, approaching and whipping off the ball cap 'lookit this, still got a full head uh hair an it's growin real fast.' I say, 'Man, your hair isn't all that long either. What you doin makin fun of B-rad's haircut?'

Then he tells me that he used to have long hair, down to his waist, real fine hair. But then once when he went to get it cut, the gal told him there was some little girl with cancer, and he could go through that Locks of Love thing and give it to her, and it was about the same color and everything. So, he says, I did it. Cut it all off and gave it to her for Locks of Love.

"And y'know whut?" he says to me, loud and beer-soaked in my ear, draping a sweaty arm over my shoulders, "I'm gonna grow it all out again, and y'know whut? I'm gonna do it again, cut it all off for them, cause it grows real fast and I kin do it again and again for them little kids, them kids goin' through alla that treatment and losin' their hair. I'm just gonna keep growin' it and cuttin' it off an' givin' it to 'em."

He didn't understand it when I said 'namaste' to him, and he may not have noticed that my eyes were all teared up when I went back to my table. When we get to our auditions for The Good Place, I know a lot of people with Doctorates and ministerial titles who will have to get in line behind Hawk.

So come to My Bar, sometime, all of you. It's a fine and educational place. But don't order no fancy-ass drinks, and don't judge too quick when you see Hawk in that same filthy t-shirt as last week. He's a jewel, is Hawk, and he can lean on me any time, sweat or no sweat.

1. Childhood comfort food?

I didn't really have one. I'd eat anything. When I hit 3rd grade we'd moved to North Carolina. Teachers were allowed to apddle there, without even calling the parents first, and my teacher, Mrs. Carlton, had a paddle on the wall labelled "Board of Education". I was absolutely affronted at the barbarity of it all, and terrified that this psychotic woman was going to strike me. For whatever reason, I turned to food for comfort. *blorp* Instant fat kid.

In retrospect, given my sexual predilections, it is both appropritate in its' own way, ironic, and amusing. And it was also amusing that, in the 3rd grade, I knew and used the word "barbarity" when describing the practice to my mother.

2. Best place to go on vacation?

A cheap motel with thick walls and a fridge in the room for the V8 and orange juice. Who needs trumped up sites to take cheesy photographs of? I want a weekend away from my laptop and fax machine, where I can see just how much friction I can produce and endure.

3. Best music to fuck to?

Oddly enough, music nut that I am (I have 8498 songs in my iTunes playlist right now, and I'm not done with my own CD collection, let alone the download list), I don't tend to want music on to fuck to. It distracts me. Bad thing for my issues.

Now, music to scene to? Different story. I have found that I love to tie with bass-heavy industrial or techno blaring. Tying at the club is incredible, and I really feel my own flow and rhythm. I've had onlookers describe how I was almost dancing with the rope, and this is as close to dancing as my non-graceful self gets.

(though MIS has decided that she is going to teach me to dance. I ... actually... kinda like the waltz )

4. Superhero you'd fuck and why?

Wonder Woman. Girl is kinky as the day is long. Sure, she's a bit too switchy for my tastes, but it wouldn't be the first time that lasso has been used on her.

1. Childhood comfort food?

My mother used to make a pot roast (us Yiddishers called it "Brust"--brisket), dusted with salt, pepper, flour and lots of fine-ground ginger, then braised a long time in sweet onions that she had caramelized before adding them to the pot. She served it with rice. It was so sweet, and slightly tangy from the ginger...ooohhhhhhh.

2. Best place to go on vacation?

Cape Eleuthra, in the eastern Bahamas, but only back in the day, before the jet-setters found it, built resort hotels and American-style bars. Now I go to the southeastern part of St. John, USVI, east of the National Park. Still not a lot of people have found it. Yet.

3. Best music to fuck to?

Almost anything by Isaac Hayes (not the Chef), but check out The Look of Love. An old favorite, spun a little different, but almost ten minutes long, and incredible!

4. Superhero you'd fuck and why?

And I'm with Smitty on this one: Wonder Woman. And isn't it obvious why? (Oh yeah, and I married her!)

And by the way, Annie, remember what I said earlier...in the end, he goes home with YOU!!

I believe she's annoyed because she is not a redhead. There does seem to be rather an anti-blond sentiment in here occasionally. Which is odd, but, hey, what can one expect from a buncha poets?
