Sleepless in Toronto

Rob's insomnia got me to thinking about my past bouts with it.

Going without sleep for two or three days is not all that uncommon for me at times.

My longest time without sleep? Late 1988...I went 6 days without shut eye.

So...I'm just curious. Whats the longest time you've gone without sleep?

About 48 hours, but that was a operational requirement. Normally I can fall asleep within five minutes, any time, any place.

Yeah, I know, you have permission to hate me now.

I understand all soldiers, at least those who have been at the sharp end, can do that. And I am envious.

Longest I ever did was about forty four hours. I had two jobs. One at the railroad and one working for a pinball machine company.

Got up at 6:30 to go to my day shift at the railroad, went to the pinball company to do maintenance on various machines, headed for home and got asked by the railroad to fill in on a midnight shift. I accepted, the overtime pay I'd get was great. Then my regular shift at the railroad and another ten hours at the pinball company.

I decided to go to bed when one of the girls on the back glass of the machine I was working on smiled and waved at me.

Did you wave back?

:cattail:

My insomnia just keeps me awake for at least an hour after going to bed, no matter how tired I am (sans a couple of times where I practically passed out).

The longest I was ever up was a Friday night where my band was practicing for a party the next day. I woke up at 6:30 on Friday,w ent to work, went to practice, stayed up all night (I tried to sleep, but the house we were practicing in got in the way, broken windows and an uncomfortable couch), went out for breakfast, practiced some more, went to the part, played, drove the band and equipment back to their houses, went for breakfast with our host and some of her friends, and then went to bed at 4:30 on Sunday morning.

And recently I stayed up for 36 hours playing poker all night after a full day of work...

Just as well. I'd probablu be lost in what ever Twilight Zone she beckoned me from if she was. ;)

Sounds like fun, actually.

Ooh! I almost forgot!

I read and voted on your two newest stories yesterday. (Speaking of redheads.)

You were right, I did enjoy them. Yum.

:rose:

You know, my fascination with rum actually began because of insomnia.

I had grief-induced depression which lasted for months, and one of the results was that I couldn't sleep.

Sometimes I could get a couple of hours in but then I'd be wide awake at 2:00 a.m. Sometimes.

But mostly I couldn't catch a wink at all. I spent some serious late nights on Lit, lurking mostly. Spent long hours talking with some Lit friends in the middle of the night.

My doctor suggested anti-depressants so I tried some for about two weeks.

Thing is, I was fucking up at work before the meds. On the meds I was still fucking up. But I just didn't care.

So I stopped the meds. And I discovered the benefits of brown rum.

(angels singing)

And the rest, as they say - :D
