Giving proper credit to an editor

Greetings. I'm writing because I thought I correctly credited my editor in the notes box on the submission page, but I cannot for the life of me find any credits to her when I view my submission. Do I need to credit her directly in the story? Or did I screw something up during the submission process? Any guidance here is appreciated as I'm really happy with the help she provided to me.

Thanks.

The notes box is to leave instructions for whoever is approving your story. If you want to give credit to your editor, it needs to be at the start or end of your story.

If I'm reading you correctly, the submissions "notes" box is only for instructions to the selection editor. If you want to credit someone, I think you need to do it directly in the text--either in a proslug or at the end. In both cases, it would be good to set it apart (by being in italics, for instance) from the actual story text.

Thanks for the replies. What confused me was this text under the "Notes" box:

"You may include any special instructions in the Notes field. These comments will not be shown on the site, they will only be read by the webmaster before posting the submission on the site. If you used the volunteer editing program, you should include the name of your editor in this box."

I mistakenly thought that was enough. I'll update my stories to include the editor's name.

my last writer complained about this....apparently there is a spot on the submission's page only for listing your editor....not sure what it's for (i don't remember seeing it on my last submission, but i could have missed it), but it doesn't put the editor's name on the actual submission....

if you want it in the submission you have to include it yourself.

Two separate issues, I think. By identifying your VE to them, your story probably gets smoother sailing onto the list (because someone has reviewed it already). But they do very clearly say "these comments will not be shown on the site," so anything you want shown needs to be registered somewhere else other than this box.

This topic, and variants of it, are frequently aired on this forum.

The consensus seems to be that while many editors welcome credits, some do not.

The reasons given previously for refusing include:

I don't want my name on something if the author has not accepted every change I suggested;
I don't want my name on anything I have not written because people might think I approve of the bits I haven't changed;
I don't want my name on anything because I don't want to be inundated with editing requests;
I don't want my name on anything because people might think I approve of a particular genre and deduce that I actually practise it.

The reasons for welcoming credits seem to include:

I worked hard on this and credit where credit is due;
I don't get asked to edit much so I want to advertise my availability;
I want to win the Editor prize in the annual Literotica Awards.

As to the Notes box: the exhortation to include a VE's name first appeared after the official VE list was weeded some three years ago. It was widely thought that it was Manu's intention to clock up some sort of editing count to enable the pruning of the list when necessary. This certainly has not happened. However, bear in mind that the powers-that-be only recognise the official list.

yep, that foxed me too. I updated my profile to credit him.

All good reasons, both for and against crediting your editor. I know these aren't your reasons. Me personally would like credit where credit is due.

I have someone edit me and I don't always use every suggestion/correction she makes so I wouldn't expect someone I edit to use all my suggestions.

I let the person know up front which categories I'd prefer not to do. That's flexible, mostly. I refuse to do anything in the Incest category. Beyond that I've never turned anyone away for subject matter of their story.

I just feel like my efforts get wasted if the author doesn't credit me for editing in their story.

The first person I did edit decided to just copy and paste what I changed and when her story posted, all my notes/suggestions/corrections posted along with the story. She credited me with editing her but the comments on her story were less than favorable.

I actually picked up a few editing jobs from her story because people liked the changes I made in the story (since they could see what the changes were).

The first editor I used on this site ended up basically re-writing my story for me. Thankfully I still had the original on my computer. I never used him again.

So with all my babbling, I guess I'd say always give credit to your editor unless he/she specifies not to.
