Tomorrow is the Day of Silence. I don't know how widely this is known, so I decided a post couldn't hurt.

Quite a few of my students are participating. The GLBT Alliance has been selling rainbow pins to wear to show that one is participating, and they were sold out as of today.

I was going to support those students that are particiating, though not participate myself since it's a bit impractical for a teacher. However, I've lost my voice and desperately need to save it tomorrow (barely can talk at all right now and it hurts like hell), which is why I'll be wearing a pin and writing down my instructions.

At 10-12 mine are really too young to understand so nothing is going on here . . . and I belong to GLSN.

True, but I had thirteen-year-olds last year, and I couldn't believe some of the abusive things that came out of their mouths.

It's easier to stop the habit from forming in the first place than it is to discourage it once it's already set in, in my opinion.

Mine are pretty innocent. We do get into the fact that the Greeks thought that having both boyfriends and wives was normal and that Alexander the Great didn't leave any heirs because he preferred boys but with the fifth graders in the room, I've been more restrained this year.

Our policy is to accommodate kids who are choosing to observe but to not make a big deal about it. Teenagers tend to blow things out of proportion, especially inner city teenagers.

I WISH they'd shut up.

Thanks for sharing the information and the link. Hope your throat feels better soon.

LOL!

Same thing where I work. Last year, we had quite a few who observed. This year, none have made the request yet, so who knows.

Hmmmm makes me curious. Do any of your schools participate in SADD rituals around prom time? Mine...at the invertal of like I think its 45min that someone dies from drunk driving...they chimed a bong...and a senior dressed up as the grim reaper came, tapped another senior on the shoulder. They would then take that senior, paint thier face white like a skull, and no one could talk to that person the rest of the day.

I haven't seen any of that done here, but I've heard of it at other schools in the area. Then again, I've only been here for a semester, so maybe they will do something like it in the future.

I know we have a SADD group, maybe they're planning something.

My own school (why I was an exchange student) didn't do anything of the sort, but they had a very good parent group doing after prom stuff.

-nods- We had an after prom party setup run by the school -shrugs- I wouldn't know though. Being that we really didn't have much in the way of funds...I chose not to go...and instead spent the night with two friends playing StarCraft till the sun rose up

Mine was fun.

I didn't manage to get a date - I was turned down by the one guy I had the guts to approach and ask - but my friend voted me into the Prom court. It was the weirdest thing ever, but rather amusing, actually. After prom was free and actually gave all students attending the opportunity to win a lot of neat prizes - appealing to their greedy nature motivated quite a few students to attend.
