I just watched Sweeny Todd. Have you seen it? If so what did you think?

I thought it was an interesting movie and a great story. It could have been done with much more impact without a lot of the gore but that's just me.

Mmmmmm I think the ending was too fast

I'm kind of interested in seeing the play, mainly since the orchestra (or at least part of it) are on stage with instruments...think I had been told they were part of the show somehow, but not completely certain.

I am not wild to see this one-- I adore the Burton/Depp team, but I do not adore Sondheim...

I can't stand musicals. there are only a handful at most that I can sit through and enjoy. This doesn't look like one of them, and I think that Burton has been going downhill since Batman Returns (didn't like that one much at all).l

I loved it! Love and tragedy.... two of my favorite things...:rose::rose::rose::rose: And of course Johnny Depp... <Swoon!!>:kiss:

I thought it was awful. I wasn't all that impressed with the play, but it was better than the movie. You can't hear the dialogue, the singing is unremarkable (and it needs to be remarkable--this isn't Rogers and Hammerstein, which can make even bad high school singers sound decent), the parts that ought to be funny aren't (with the exception of the meat pie song), the sets are dull, the costumes not much, and Burton's signature goth look is getting really monotonous and tiring (Helena looked like she walked out of the Corpse Bride!).

And please, can't the Burton cast ANYONE else in his movies?

With the play I could kinda forgive the ridiculous story for being a send-up of Victorian melodrama, but the movie didn't suggest any of that satirical edge and so came across as absurd. As "Don't you hate when that happens?" Like "Don't you hate when your girlfriend gets sent to madhouse?" It was, ultimately, a shaggy dog story.

The only thing I liked about this movie was that I didn't spend money to see it in the theater.

I first saw Sweeny Todd in the 8th Grade, same age as my daughter when the Burton version came out. :)

It's my favorite operetta of all time--it's chock full of classic Sondheim schtick, though, so I would expect Stella to be under-awed. The movie itself is a good adaption, if a bit twee, but (IMO) the hard-to-find video of the original Broadway cast is optimal.

I thought it was okay. Despite the hype I wasn't' expecting too much so...it was okay.

Go see (rent) Perfume: The Story of a Murder - that's a goodie!

I liked the music- would like to hear it with people who sing more than act.

The story itself was crap for me -- mostly, the whole killing the wife thing was so predictable but without the sense of 'inevitability' or a strong sense of 'thematic tie'.

Killing the wife was like in the movie Heat when the DeNiro character goes back to kill the traitor... I knew De Niro was going to die, I knew it was the wrong thing to do... but "I understood..." The inevitability of it all, the theme of a criminal's life... "It's wrong thing, D, but I understand and I'll watch the train wreck!"

As soon as I saw recognized the wife as the bag lady, I wanted to walk out of the theatre.
