Falk believes that Israel has been avoiding criticism
The next UN investigator into Israel conduct in the occupied territories has stood by comments comparing Israeli actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Richard Falk said he believed that up to now Israel had been successful in avoiding the criticism that it was due.

Professor Falk is scheduled to take up his post for the UN Human Rights Council later in the year.

But Israel wants his mandate changed to probe Palestinian actions as well.

Professor Falk said he drew the comparison between the treatment of Palestinians with the Nazi record of collective atrocity, because of what he described as the massive Israeli punishment directed at the entire population of Gaza.

He said he understood that it was a provocative thing to say, but at the time, last summer, he had wanted to shake the American public from its torpor.

Israeli actions in Gaza are collective punishment, says Falk

"If this kind of situation had existed for instance in the manner in which China was dealing with Tibet or the Sudanese government was dealing with Darfur, I think there would be no reluctance to make that comparison," he said.

That reluctance was, he argued, based on the particular historical sensitivity of the Jewish people, and Israel's ability to avoid having their policies held up to international law and morality.

These and other comments from Professor Falk comments are, if anything, even harsher than the current UN investigator, John Dugard, who himself has been withering about Israel's actions.

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said that Israel wanted the UN investigator's mandate changed, so that he could look into human rights violations by the Palestinians as well as Israel.

If that were not to happen, the Israeli government may consider barring entry to the new UN investigator.

The parallel leave a bit to be desired...the ol' limey guilt over the whole Israel situation causes some overcompensation...

As I recall it, the Nazis killed in cold blood several million Jewish people for the crime of simply being Jewish.

Whereas the Israelis are being subjected to daily rocket attacks from the folks who previously (and in the future will again try to) sent suicide bombers to civilian populations, who call for the wholesale destruction of Israel, and who obey no international accords, including those signed by the Palestinians themselves.

So, in retaliation, Israel for a time withheld some fuel for power generation, and killed a few dozen civilians while targeting Hamas leaders who were using the civilian population as a shield. I'm sure there are some other bad things they've done to people who were trying to kill them. (I love it when people argue on behalf of the Palestinians that that rockets haven't been that deadly to the Israeli people yet, as though that was a sign of good will instead of a temporary failing.)

I think the Jews might have preferred that this level of hostility had been directed at them by the Nazis, vs. the whole genocide thing.

To say anyone prefers hostility on any level is wrong despite that handful of posters who attempt daily to fight through the ignore lists to prove they are hostile bullies in search of a victim.

"Professor Falk" is a falking liar.

Google "UN resolution Israel" and report back how many times Israel has "avoided criticism."

What bullshit.

Sorry, I should have been clear that most of the "hostility" is illusory..."why, they're withholding fuel for power, when at night, the temperature dips to 48 degrees!"

The UN, at it's core, is a failed organization. Beyond a few things that it does fairly well, like hand out food and medicine, it hasn't done well at all. Miserable Failure, is the phrase that comes to mind.

That would be you being kind unfortunately

Kofi Annan and his family did OK by the UN.

I'm sure there are lots of other third world bureaucrats who can make similar statements.

Oh, and Ted Turner likes it.

Anan was certainly vilified, and in many respects deserved it. The frightening thing about it is that Anan was the first Sec. Gen. since Dag Hammarskjöld that was actually somewhat effective. <shrug>

In order for the UN to be effective, the structure and membership of the Security Council would have to be changed. And that isn't going to happen.

Of course not, who's going to give up their seat or their veto?
