NY Gov Spitzer linked to prostitution

I'm sorry, this just doesn't even hit my radar. So he fucked a prostitute. That's a problem between he and his wife. I know it's illegal, but it shouldn't be. Think how much money could be saved without all those nifty little "sting" operations rounding up all the big, bad criminal hookers. I know I feel much safer with them off the street.

This just takes the focus off of the really important issues.

This is where this is similar to some of the Republican sex scandals. Being a holier than thou lawmaker about these things--and, like the Republicans involved were with homosexuality and child abuse, Spitzer has been about family values and prostitution. (He went after everyone linked in any way to two similar prostitution rings while he was New York attorney general.) I see no reason, therefore, not to go after him in public and rub his nose in his hypocrisy.

And then, to the extent his involvement is illegal in the States, as a lawyer and law maker he's hardly dumb about that and deserves to be prosecuted fully too.

Not believing it should be illegal and the fact that most aspects of it are illegal in the States (well, most States, I think) are two different issues.

At $5,000 an hour in unreported income, this very likely ain't no "little" sting operation. The investigation started in the IRS.

And, again. If it's illegal, it's illegal. And if folks who are the ones who could change the law are choosing not to but to engage in it, they are the first ones who should be jailed for it, IMO.

I think we both know that I was not referring to this one in particular.

You have your priorities... I have mine.

What a man does with his penis, doesn't happen to be one of them. I don't want to see the man down the street prosecuted for it, so why would I want a politician to be, just because he is a politician. His problems with the IRS... hell, that's another thread.

Just my opinion, darlin.

Notice haow so many are being lienient? He's a Dem. If it was a Rep. they'd all be calling for public castration. A bit Two faced.
Really? How many? Please, enlighten us. Surely Fox News is calling for public castration after begging for leniency for all those Republican scandals.

Really, D.P. you've got to be careful. You say shit like this and it's too easy to point out that the pot is calling the kettle black.

Personally, I think government should stay out of the bedroom--any one's bedroom, period. And any one, Dem or Republican that says otherwise doesn't get my support. And if they fuck around while saying it, they get reamed by me.

So. Where are these "many" that are so accepting of this hypocrisy? I'd like to see your numbers. Then I'll tally up the republicans I see calling for castration and we can see which one of us has more "many."

Ah, no, we didn't both know that. You were directly referring to this one, so I thought it natural to assume you meant what you posted.

Which again, "shouldn't be" doesn't trump "is" in the courts or the public venue.

We both know what "assuming" does. I could sit here and point out the verbal clues which should have allowed you to see that I was not referring to any singular event, but what would be the point?

My daddy taught me how to debate an issue into the ground. Thankfully, my momma taught me that it is not always necessary or wise to do so.

I can agree to disagree on the fine points... can you?

You seem to have a burr in your knickers (not for the first time), for no particular reason. I found your "you and I both know" a little snotty. I had no idea I was debating to start with. Just adding opinions. So, I'll leave you to the field (and, I hope, getting the knot out of your knickers.)

I agree with you 100%, and it is obvious from your wording that you are referring to prostitution involving only consenting adults in general, not only this one case. What makes this case noteworthy is that the man is such a high level politico and his hypocrisy, because he is known as a campaigner against commercial sex. Because of the latter, and that alone, I hope they lower the boom on him. If his attitude had been that of "live and let live" as most men believe, I would feel completely different.

At least we know that his political career is now about as viable as that of Mike Nifong. :D

*grins... I really don't darlin...

I am known for being a tad sarcastic, but it takes quite a lot to "knot my knickers". (Sorry that one makes me laugh.)

I am really a cream puff.

Just read the posts right here. I don't care about the media, my comment was about these posts. This is what I mean, everyone turning it into a debate on legalizing prostitution. That has no bearing on this incident because it is not legal now and he broke the law! He has been crusading for law and order and would have nailed any other public official for the same thing when he was Attorny General, now he gets slammed, justice.

Abraham Lincoln remarked, "Show me a man with no vices, and I will show you a man without virtue."

Ol' Abe, that most enigmatic of men, was on to something. I am fond of Bill Shakespeare's, "A little bad makes a better man.*"
*"Measure For Measure"

I'm sorry to witness Spitzer's downfall. I rejoiced and delighted at the light he cast in many of the dark corners of the "investment business." When, in the face of necessity, I was serving my (fortunately, brief) time in hell (a/k/a the "sell side") in 2003 I was sent off to NYC to attend a Securities Industry Association regulatory confab, it was all I could do to control myself. Even at that late date, those folk (the Goldman Sachs',the Jack Grubmans, the Frank Quattrones, the Sandy Weills, the Mary Meekers, the Merrill Lynches, the Morgan Stanleys and their myrmidons) still didn't "get it."

The rule has always been since time immemorial that Republican scandals are always about money, and Democratic scandals are always about sex. That's how I knew I was a democrat: I was more interested in sex than money.

It's good to know things are returning to normal.

I think it is fascinating that everyone in this thread is treating this as an ioslated incident -- and as such, it is pretty trivial. But -- just how did Spitzer pay for that whore. That's a lot of money to hide from your wife. If he somehow wrote it off as a travel expense, or if someone else provided him with that service as a bribe, then that opens up an entirely different realm of misbehavior -- one that is more damaging than just an unauthorized ejaculation.

And -- is it really credible that this is a one time adventure that went bad? More likely this has been going on for a long time.

If there are any of these complications, he is truly dead meat politically.

From what I have heard, Spitzer is a previous client of this operation, making it not a one-time thing. By my standards, $4,300 is a lot of money, but it is peanuts to some persons. If this were a bribe or some kind of expense account cheating, that would be serious too.

The big thing is the hypocrisy. If Spitzer had been advocating legalization or, at least, decriminalization of prostitution, most people would probably ignore this. As a "sin fighter" he has outed himself as a hypocrite, and that is inexcusable.

Well, if you want to get elected in the States you pretty much have to position yourself as a warrior against EVIL! (Add cool reverb and echo sound effects here.)

Which is why things like this are such a big deal. People hate their saints and crusaders to be just human beings after all. ;)

It's tricky for Dems. Republicans are allowed to be hypocrites. They only have to confess that they sinned and appear sorry for it and they're forgiven according to the Christian script. That's not an option for Democrats, who usually don't really consider it a sin and so can't marshall the necessary guilt and contrition.

Republicans are still waiting for Clinton to "apologize". Yeah, right. It's not going to happen. He's probably still screwing around.

Clinton is the example of a double standard. He lied under oath, period, end of argument. The apologists tried to make the discussion something else and the Senate fell for it. If any of us lied under oath we would be in jail.

...and the fact that he got a blowjob affected how he did his job as president how?

That is what he is saying. He wasn't wrong for getting a blowjob. He was wrong for lying in a deposition for a federal inquiry. He and his wife were implicated in a banking scandel. He lied under oath about having an affair, and that was being used to show that if he lied about one hting he was capable of lying about the scandel he was implicated in. The blow job was secondary at best, but it was blown out of proportion by the media as if it was the main focus.

Personally, I just wish that somoene had smacked him across the face when he said, "That depends on what your fefinition of the word "is" is."

No, the blowjob is immaterial, actually. Lying under oath isn't. But then, he's from Arkansas, a state whose political processes make Lousiana's admirable.

TGP has it right. It was the media that was fixated on the sex, as with all things "newsworthy". Sensation has replaced information in this country so that the "informed voter" is turning into an oxymoron for no other reason than you can't get decent information. Demagogue by newspaper/television/and-especially-blog seems to be the name of the game, these days. May God have mercy on this republic.

Look, every few years someone in Washington DC gets caught with their weiner in the wrong hole. A short list that I can remember...

Senator Wilber Mills and Fanny Fox (The Reflecting Pond Bombshell)
President Eisenhauer and his Driver
President Kennedy and at least a dozen known women ("John Kennedy doing what he did best.")
Even Franklin Roosevelt is seems had some lady punch on the side.

But over the past few years it seems like it's gotten either more out of hand or more public...

Senator Bob Packwood (Jerk anyway), Larry Craig, Newt Gingrich, Bob Barr, Brock Adams, Jim Bates, Gary Hart... The list is endless.

So, does this mean politicians are becomming worse or is it because the press is looking deeper and we are becomming less tolerant?

I think the latter.
