Is it toxic? Are there non-toxic brands I can look for?

I'm - er - serving it as a spread with whole grain bagels. ;) Not really.

1. Yes. This doesn't stop anyone from doing as they do, though. I don't know which is more or less toxic, there may be some more expert bootblacks out there with opinion, but I do think all the labels discourage ingestion for reasons.

2. Interesting.

Can you suggest an alternative that won't ruin the leather of someone's super-fine boots?

He's got a fucking hot scenario in mind....

I've always preferred meltonian to kiwi. It's runnier though, so you can't do that cool fireplay thing with it, really.

Oh, an alternative that must be ingested?

I might just do a light bit of food grade olive or coconut oil, maybe. Maybe. Don't quote me on it and then ruin the boots, but those are nice enough to skin that I think they'd maybe be OK on leather.

Hmm, I'll have to ask around - we also have some scrap leather we could test on. Love the idea of a black tongue, tho. :p

Thank you.

Horse geek who spends way too much time oiling leather says this should work fine. If the boots were a color other than black, I'd warn that the oil might stain them darker, but they ain't gonna get much darker than black, are they? ;)

I have, for the record, played with tons of people who lick the boots in lieu of the water bead or spitpolish. I've not played with anyone who's gotten their tongue black, but I'm sure there are a few pigs out there who are alive and well. And yes, that sounds insane hot.

It's a risk, it can be mitigated, it will probably not kill you if this is not a daily event thing and you're not eating, like, tablespoons of the stuff. But it is toxic.

Non toxic bootblack would be a great scene invention, actually.

Very cool - thank you! I'm sure we'll test it on scrap, anyway, but - definitely good to know.

Yeaaah I'm thinking there'd be a market for it, for sure. ;)

I suppose I've swallowed worse, and it wouldn't be daily.

The inside of a banana skin. Tastes and smells good and makes leather shiny.

Err, please don't ask me why I know that.

Vegemite, it's black, it's greasy ( yet thick ) and it's rich in Vitamin B

I saw someone try Vegemite (or was it Marmite? Who knows) on Rove, back when he was still Rove Live. It was their first time trying it, and a plate with a piece of toast and a butter knife were put in front of the person. (I can't remember who it was honestly.)

The person just took a huge dollop of it on the knife and ate it straight. The look on the face was absolutely hilarious.

I've never tried the stuff, and have been living in NZ for over 4 years. I say natural food should simply not be black, therefore it's wrong. :p

Vegemite sounds like an interesting possibility - I wonder if it would damage the leather, though?

Or - stink? :) I've never encountered Vegemite.

The banana peels are a great idea, but we're sort of going for the look of boot black, as much as anything else.

Thanks so much for taking this inquiry seriously, and for your suggestions!!

No Marla it would be fine on leather, wouldn't damage it. Might even enhance it. Has a slight yeast / sea smell. It has a high salt content. If the base color of the leather is black/dark it will pose no challenge whatsoever. It only requires a small amount. I think it has the potential to be perfect for your uses from what I have been able to ascertain. Good luck with it, love to hear the outcome:rose:

Give me five minutes, I'm cooking, I'll might as well go give it a test run on a thick black leather belt of mine for you.

I'll even lick it brb

: laughingtears : It was yum, I'd do it again.

Only needed the tiniest amount and it covered a good area, made the leather look extra glossy, adhered well, no chance it would drip off to other areas.

Tasted like .......... vegemite, which I happen to love.

Wiped the belt with a damp cloth, shows no sign of 'watermark' from where it was applied.

I am giving this 1 very kinky Michelin-star :rose:
