EL's already seen it, and I don't think I'll keep it "public" for too long--day or two maybe, just so some folks can see it (those I tell). But, so here's the backstory:

When I was sixteen, I met this girl at "Smart Kid Camp" (not its official name, but I was a bright fella, it was a secluded program for smart folks... blah, blah. blah). We spent the Summer of '97 together. It was Grease, basically. I was the iconoclastic boy, she was the good girl. We hit it off big, we had'a da' romance, and we shared the same birthday... like, the exact same one... same day, same month, same year.

So, after that summer, we never saw each other again. I was off to college, she was finishing high school. We lost track of each other pretty quick (we lived hours and hours apart even before I went to college). Blah, blah, blah.

So, ten years later, she finds me. Back this past December, we met up again, for the first time in a decade--we caught up on old times, marvelled at being older, talked about how we became who we are (she'd spent a year in Belgium, time in South America; I decided I wanted to be a philosopher more than a physician). She's still foxy-foxy (cheerleader, dance-team, etc. in high school), and a green-movement environmentalist who likes camping and animals; I'm not so bad, and a dirty capitalist who likes shiny things and urban affairs.

And we spent a night together I won't go into much detail about. But it was nice.

So, we've been keeping in touch--she's back in Michigan doing Masters work--and for our birthday, I wanted to get her the most memorable present ever. I gave her instructions not to open my present until she'd seen a video I made, explaining everything. It took some work, putting the present together. EL can attest to how much work it took to get it all done.

I figure I might share that I, too, have a soul. I'm more than just some heartless Republican logician.

Joe,

You silly assed sentimental Son of a Bitch.

You brought a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. Absolutley incredible.

One day I might take the time to explain the Coffee Pot and Pistol sitting in my Hutch. You would enjoy it.

Well Joe... Perhaps "republican logician" is the proverbial oxymoron, but "hearltess" clearly you aren't.

Thanks for letting us see this part of you....

Its actually a budding little tiny romance right now--like, tonite, we talked on the phone for four hours.

I haven't done that since I was a teenager.

And she thinks I ought vote Obama.

I think I'm in love. ;) On a softer, more serious note, these are beautiful, and I think that the gift you gave her is very meaningful; to me, there is no more thoughtful gift in the world than something that means a lot to you, and your taking the time to make videos to tell her the story gives it that much more meaning. I wish the both of you the best of luck.

PS I've been to the Neuschwanstein Castle myself, so I could see in my head what you were talking about when you described the climb up the hill and the inside of the castle itself. If your rock was still there in 1997 and '98, it probably saw me. :)

Getting all nervous and un-joe like - Check.

*another happy sigh*

It's so romantic, it really is. I love romance.

Joe, I have a new respect for you. Before watching the videos I thought you were very errogant, now with you showing us the 'real' Joe, I see you aren't as pompus as you let on to be.

If you don't see it, its a compliment! lol
Good luck with your relationship-I give you a 10 when it comes to thinking of what a person truly should get as a gift-Im sure she will never get a set of flatware for Christmas!!! (yes for my second Christmas after we were married!)

We have warmer, softer sides--they're just not rational or relevant to most political conversations. And, they're often unexplored. And open to only women. And only those I'm interested in.

They're my Kryptonite.

/Always/ have been.
