New Authors Chime In, Will Mentor

Would love to start a new forum without all of the senseless noise (who turns you on, who do you wanna fuck, etc), but that won't happen. So I do the best I can within the framework with which we must submit to.

My aim is to establish a thread where authors share ideas. The intent is for experienced writers to share ideas with new writers, and maybe even lead writers to available editors.

My intent is well-meaning. Whether or not it succeeds is up to you.

Is there any interest?

Don't be silly... it's a great idea. Just give it some time for people to think it through. ;)

Once upon a time, we asked for a 'writer's desk' adjunct to the Hangout.

There is a lot of good stuff buried in these pages-- but it's hard to find.

Some people need senseless noise so they are able to write.

An intent admirable. I understand the feeling. Quite well. The delicate handling of a new character intro doesn't fare well on Friday night.
:D

The senseless noise is all part of what you get when a group of like-minded people meet up - at a club or a bar even a specific group meeting - they don't only talk about the one thing that brought them all there. They talk about lots of things. From talk comes ideas, from ideas come the writing that is the glue to their gatherings.

The AH is a gathering, similar to your favourite coffee shop or bar. We talk about writing, we vent about trolls and dissatisfaction with the voting system. We have little challenges, there's always one going on. We instigate collaborations, we have coffee, read newspapers, talk about the world at home and outside.

We welcome newcomers, we help with problems with writing, offer editing services, support each other in times of personal and professional stress, pull our hair out at the stupidity of government, and still be go back to writing, ideas, suggestions.

Out of that noise, as a group, we have produced a whole series of books in the real world which have donated money to specific charities. We have shared the joint pain of loss and pleasure of personal joy. We even watch romances grow, partnerships form, our hearts swelling with their love. Many of our number have achieved success in the real world of writing, and we applaud that success. But still we come back here, to be part of what makes up the AH.

I like our senseless noise. Without it, the AH wouldn't be the AH.

It's not compulsory, you can join in with as much or as little as you like.

I wouldn't change it for the world.

Where would we be without senseless noise. I'm here more often when I'm writing because it's a place to unwind, swop thoughts, jokes, ask for help. It works and serious threads work too. Good luck with yours. The STORY thread, see link in my sig, is quite different from Lit/AH with a specific purpose and required too many sub-threads to allow it to work on Lit without petitioning the owners for a separate forum. Despite it's 'serious' intent, we invariably share the same jokes and diversions enjoyed on Lit.

Actually, I would love a mentor, and a place to work on my creative side. I have not written anything except academic writing for a very long time. I wrote short stories when I was young, and though it is akin to riding a bike, those first few rusty strokes are wobbly.

Let me know if you get it going. I will be first in line.

pish posh

Most writers, here, believe they invented English, and quarrel ad nauseum about punctuation/grammar trifles. That is, theyre so fucking anal you cant get an ice-pick up their ass with a hammer.

Oh, I don't know about that. Given the right lube, a 90 pound jackhammer (pneumatic drill) might be able to do the trick.

Mats, that was very well put. You must be a writer. :rose:

I devoted my life to discovering a steel alloy that can handle the harsh conditions and withering punishment common within the average LIT author's butt. Maybe a special space-grade ceramic ice-pick?

I dunno. There's about a dozne "writerly" threads on the front page right now.
Whenever I need writery type help, I get it within minutes. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen if this were a "senseless noise" free zone. It's the noise that keeps the writers hanging around to answer writing questions when they come up.

I agree with Matriarch's post above. The AH is generally a friendly place and the "noise" helps deal with our insecurities, distracts us from terminal writer's block etc.

The Author's Hangout Thread archive was supposed to be the place to cover most of the literary themes but the password to amend the posts has been lost with the archiver.

Sometimes we oldies forget that we once needed the simple questions answered such as "Which POV (point of view) is best for erotic writing?"

We seem to agree that second person is difficult to make convincing but not impossible. First person or third person cover most of the stories on this site.

I think that most writerly questions can be answered from the accumulated knowledge of the AH.

PS. You must remember time zones. Posting your first enquiry at 2.59 am Greenwich Mean Time means that some habitues of the AH won't see it for at least six hours. Fast response depends on who is around at the time.

We English did invent English. We then gave it to the world who tortured it into almost unrecognisable forms. English continues to evolve.

As for quarrelling about punctuation/grammar? We are writers. Words and their presentation are the tools we use. We argue about the best way to work but there are many ways so the arguments are unending.

Exactly. Punctuation and grammar are not trifles. They are the base of our work. Get it wrong, and what you've written just doesn't make sense.

It's not really noise, Og. It's the eyes peering at us from the darkness. They are watching us, you know. The follow us everywhere. They read our emails and our posts.

God, this sounds so paranoid, but that's what they want us to think.

But my alts are stalking them too. Even trolls have homes.

I don't like going to some of the places, but someone has to. Fag-Ash Lil will go anywhere if there's tobacco nearby.

As evidenced by the admittedly few messages on my story actually praising the phrasing, grammar and punctuation. There are readers that appreciate a particular command of the language.

Hey Poppy, welcome to AH! :)
