188/126 when i went in :(

they can't find what's making my blood pressure go up...
i don't fit any parameter
not a saltoholic
not male
not overweight
not old
and my comsumption of caffeine, alcohol is mild
i don't smoke
i do have stress (but who doesn't)

the only thing left is hereditary which does run on my fathers side

i've got an appt on 3/1 but until then i'm on a low dose of Metoprololo Tartrate
and Hydrochlorothiazide

who knows anything about high blood pressure? i'm going to start surfing the net about the drugs and treatment plus options but i know i'm going to be overwhelmed with too much information

anybody know any good sites that give me the ten minute version without scaring the shit of me?

Metoprololo is also known as Lopressor, be careful with it, I was on it a few years ago, and it made me feel catatonic, and in a zombie like trance at times.

When Doctors aren't sure what is causing your issues, they shouldn't just throw drugs at the problem.

I would seek a second opinion from another Doctor.

The WebMD page on hypertension offers a good amount of medically-vetted info on a variety of subtopics regarding high blood pressure. Look over the whole first page (the link), then read the sections that get your attention.

About a quarter of the way down the left side, there's a "Hypertension / High Blood Pressure Guide" that provides sections for Overview & Facts, Symptoms & Types, Diagnosis & Tests, Treatment & Care, Living & Managing, and Support & Resources.

Just below and to the right of that is a section called "Community and Resources," which includes a board/forum on "Managing Your Hypertension" and a link to other boards which may be helpful/supportive as you look into your condition.

Please note that many health professionals now consider heart attacks/cardiac disease to be the greatest danger to women, so I hope you'll look into this thoroughly - and have your doctor(s) do the same! - and protect your health, and yourself. :rose:

ETA: I've also taken metoprolol/Lopressor for hypertension in the past without serious side effects, though some people do, I understand, have some issues with it. Here's a link to the WebMD info page on it, including side effects, precautions, and interactions.

Mine wasn't quite that high two years, and my doc slapped meds on me and then gave me the Terror Speech of Doom. I lost abunch of weight, got myself in better shape, and ditched the meds. Hated them. They made me feel spacey, like IYM said.

The one thing you did not mention in your list was how much exercise you get. I know that you are anything but overweight, but do you exercise to keep it that way, or are you just naturally slender?

Have you had your cholesterol level checked? It's possible to have high cholesterol even if you're not overweight.

If you haven't had blood tests in a while, it would be good to get a check-up on everything - liver, kidney, thyroid, blood count, blood sugar etc. It rules a lot of things out.

The uk website NHS Direct has lots of good information in layman's terms. The wiki page on hypertension (the medical term for high blood pressure) isn't too bad if you want to understand things from a biological perspective.

I agree with IYM that you should get another opinion if your doctor doesn't turn up some concrete pathology soon. Don't just take the meds and hope as in the long term, even if they lower your BP, they could mask other problems that haven't been properly investigated.

I hope that you get to the bottom of this soon.

Hospitals suck. Hope you are feeling better, can get to the bottom of it asap without any additional complications ..... and can just stay away from them. :rose:

I'm so sorry you've been in the hospital and the docs are not figuring out why.

*HUG*

I hope they figure it out soon. I hope you are feeling better.

This happened to me about a year ago. It was stress that brought it on and also uncovered a serious heart arrythmia. Both the pressure and the heart thing are hereditary on my fathers side. I was told by my doctor and my fathers heart specialist (even though i didn't want to hear it) that the best thing is that they now know enough to start you on meds right away and in the past did not start people on medication to control the problem. I take enalapril and havent had a problem but for the first week i took it until i got used to the mild side effects.
My personal opinion... educate yourself, it is the best defense against any illness. Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon. :rose:

....thanks everybody for the well wishes:rose: i'm going to start reading tonight:)

Pet I hate that you had to be put in the hospital due to the BP..I hope you can find a way to get it under control..Hope you can find out what is causing it...

I agree with Sir Winston about WebMd..it is the best place to find info..

Take care of yourself..

Dr. Betticus recommends a light spanking on your tushie with a bare hand followed up by at least 4 hours of shoe shopping. :D

...i'm naturally slender and practice yoga but nothing like jogging, walking, etc.

...the hospital did lab work, ct scans and xrays (i have a history of thrombosis) and said everything looked fine but the physician that i see on 3/1 will do blood work again

...the dose is low, 25 mg once a day until i can get in to the other doctor:) it said on the bottle that it might make me drowsy but i haven't noticed anything yet, but i'm high strung anyway:rolleyes:

My suggestion would be to have a cholesterol check (some people have high cholesterol problems independent of their dietary habits), and get into some sort of regular exercise. Even if you are not overweight, exercise can be one of the best ways of lowering high blood pressure. Hope you are feeling better soon.:rose:
