Guys,

I dont know if any one has ever posted such a thread in this forum but I really want to know how much time (in hrs, days or weeks) do Authors of Literotica usually take to write an erotic story?

It depends. My Halloween story wrote itself in a matter of minutes. All I had to do was keep up with the typing. And a have a few others I'm still working on, months later.

Usually about a couple hours.

But you are totally missing a serious point, friend. Typing out a story is nothing. The writing occurs long before you ever sit down to type. You develop your characters and plot in your head, play with it, work and rework it, then type it out. Later comes the hard work or editing and rewriting. Sometimes other things (like LIFE) get in the way and it takes longer.

So really, how long? Somewhere between a few days and five years., I would guess. Remember that it took Steven King twenty years to write The Dark Tower.

My record from starting to type to submitting the story is one 12 hour day.

My slowest? A story started in 1986 still incomplete.

Usual? From first thought to completion is about a couple of months.

Too much.

I started thinking about Over the Sink one morning, and submitted it about 24 hours later.

Over the Sink 2 took about a week.

Over the sink 3 another week, or month.

Little Red Rides the Hood took years (and is my worst effort).

Britney and the Tentacle Monster took months.

Jennifer and the Tentacle Monster took weeks.

The Neighbor's Ghost was quickly written, but took me years to submit.

Woking Out was done in an afternoon from first concept to submission.

An average of 3 hours from when my mind tells me it's ready to start typing until it's written, reviewed, and submitted.

Some short pieces an be written in a matter of hours, others take days, weeks months or even years to complete. I never know how long it'll take.

I generally consider that if I've managed to write a 1000 words of a story, it's been a good day. I tend to write in chapters, so it takes me a week of 'good days' to write a 2 Lit-page-chapter. As I'm back to working full time again after the holidays, it might be a while before the next 'good' day.

I guess it would be easier if I wasn't such a perfectionist. I tend to edit as I'm going along, rather than spew words on to the page and then edit. On the plus side, this means that it doesn't take too long to get a chapter ready for posting once it's finished.

But I'd love to have a go at Naniwrimo at some stage, just to force myself to write and let a story flow and not get hung up on repeating words, etc. One day soon, I'll have a November when I can do it!

As Jenny said, the story's in my head for a lot longer than the time it takes to write. I tend to get completely lost in my characters' worlds--then feel utterly bereft when I've finished the story.

As the others have said, it varies. I used to take part in a contest on a fan site where we had a week to write a story to a set topic. I generally got them done, from concept to submission in half the week allowed. (Three of them appear here in the celebrities section).
Others have taken months. A couple look like they'e gonna take years, if they ever get finished at all.

It takes as long as it takes. I start a story and write until it is finished or I run out of steam. If the latter, then it goes in the backburner file until I get motivated again on it or bored enough to have another look at it.

So how long does it take to write a story? anywhere from three hours to infinity.

Hi y'all, I'm new here. I figure this is as good a thread to start posting in as any. :)

It takes me from a few hours to a few months to write a story - sadly I often give up halfway through, resulting in kB upon kB of half-written stories saved to my hard drive. Heh.

Welcome to the madhouse and don't worry about those half finished stories. I have a ton of them. Sometimes I get new inspiration and I finish one. Some of my best rated stories have come from the dead story file. Kind of like some soups and stews are better after a few days sitting in the back of the fridge.

My record is a 4,900 word story in about 4 hours--it just flowed--but I had plotted it all out in my mind.

I have two stories I have been tinkering with for over a year--things won't jell so I put them away for a while.

I love contests because of the deadlines--and I function well under pressure. :D

Thank ya muchly! :)

I find the same thing with old stories- if I can get around to finishing them, which is very rarely. I wish I had the time to just sit and write all day. Sigh! ;)

The first story I ever started writing is still unfinished.

I have more unfinished stories than finished stories by more than ten to one.

My longest story is also unfinished at around 60,000 words, and only a third through the story I was planning (though it needs serious editing, losing about 1/3 of what I have finished).

An hour to ... years.

I'm currently redoing my entire 50,000 word novel (2 years + ) as well as restarting one I started last year, but stopped. I have a 30,000 word sequel written, but when I do return to it, I'll be completely restarting it too, because I need it to fit with the 50,000 word one I'm redoing right now.
