Well, I did it.

The last e-book I contracted is done.

I've asked for my rights to it back. The whole process took such bleeding chunks out of my self esteem it's better to put it out of its misery.

Now to work on restoring my confidence on my ability to write.

Rob,
The catagory you write is not of great interest to me. I have, however, read your stuff.

Fuck the self esteme - pity bullshit. Just keep writing. You have a following and a talent. Fuck the publishers. What do they know anyway? If it were up to them we'd all be writing children's books and long treatises praising GWB. (Can you say "numb nutz"?)

Sad. But you have to do what you have to do.

Ah. So this is what has been interfering with your writing.

Kiss the she-hag editor goodbye and put your book somewhere safe.

And start writing again.

*snuggles* Want me to go beat 'em up for you? You just say the word, sweetie.

I beg your pardon, Rob, but why do you care what others think? Why do you write? Is it for glory and fame? Or do you write because there's something in you that needs to get out? I don't know about you, but I write for me. If I get published, it's just a bonus. Do what makes you happy, doll. Reach into yourself and write the story that's in you and say "fuck 'em" to the rest of the world.

Um, normally I don't care much what people think.

But when a person you trust, and I did trust them, asks for 45 changes on a single page of your work you have to start wondering. The fact that they missed a deadline, haven't set a new one and have sent only a partial edit so far isn't helping.

I'd say they lack professionalism. You're well-shut of them.

Well, I talked with a friend of mine. They gave me some good advice and a different perspective.

The publisher wrote back saying they're still interested.

I'll give it some more thought.

I wish you the best on it. Just remember, it's your brainchild and no one can write it like you.

That should tell you all you need to know. :D

You did right, even if it makes you sad.

I take it these aren't punctuation issues, but sentence construction and wording?

It sounds as though this person has a different conception of what your writing style is-- and what it should be. They are trying to turn you into them-- the mark of a new (hopefully new, any way) editor.
It's a fault of mine, in fact! I was looking at some pages from James Buchanon, and I looked at my edits-- I'd cut almost 50% of his words. So, I ditched my entire edit. I might send ONE page back as an example, but only after I've checked with him first to see if he were willing to scalpel his own work that drastically.

Rob, would you be willing to send me that first page with the edits? I'd like it for the purely selfish reason that I want to know for myself, how far is too far. It would be an object lesson for me. :)

I know how you feel Rob. I ended up having to cancel my contract that I had gotten on a story because the editor wanted me to pretty much re-write the story. I never intended for that story to go in the direction, and with me now working full time I did not have time for a complete re-write. I swear, there wasn't one sentence in that story that didn't have red in it when the editor sent it back to me. After I saw it, I wondered why the heck they accepted it in the first place.

Arrgh!

Maybe I've got a totally different mind set but I'm proud of myself when I do have one or two sentances that have no changes in it out of a whole edited document sent back to me.

But I know my grammar and punctuation suck, I know I sometimes use English Colloqualisms and local spellings that no one else gets or just aren't proper English.

I know I'm still learning the ropes and I'm happy to take on the advice of my editor who I quite happily assume knows more about writing a popular book than I do.

But then I really am very easy going and I've had brill Editors on all my published works so far.

My whining yesterday, and the support it garnered, seemed to have shaken something loose.

I just spent an hour and a bit writing. :nana:

Should have done this sooner.

Thank you.

I got started on that Diane story I was talking about. I'm going to go back to my edits on my e-book tomorrow.

Zoot was right. I should start acting like a professional and suck it up. ;)

Sounds like you're exactly where you need to be. On the path, so to speak.

Now in a year or two, if I'm lucky enough to experience some successes with my writings, will you remember this and give me the same pep talk or boot in the ass?

Thank you so very much.
