i should've known the last modest mouse cd would suck when i found out johnny marr was on it. as much as i loved the smiths i've really outgrown the fuckers and, besides, bringing in a ringer is never a good sign.

anyway, that cd just showed that mm have seriously lost their balls. they sound nothing like the band i first heard on mixed tapes and various other sources when i was broke. i'm just glad i heard their early stuff, which is fucking brilliant, before i heard their last two albums or i would've completely ignored everything they ever did.

also, i'm not a big fan of newer pinback, either. imo, they peaked with blue screen life. i still like the newer stuff, but i love blue screen life. they really need to top that soon or i'm going to get fucking pissed.

Very cool post, Indie - love that you linked to vids so I can actually hear a few of them. I've heard of some that I've never listened to, but never actually been ambitious enough to go looking for them.

fantastic post snob.......some great songs there you have listed, and never heard any of them before....!

Apart from the new Radiohead album, absolutely nothing really grabbed me this year. Lots of OK stuff from Amy Winehouse, the new Killers album, the new HardFi album. But a B- for the year.

Come on, there has to be others out there calling my taste shit and that i'm a total snob.

(pleaseeeeeeee).

So this is what the youth are listening to. Very interesting.

I always found both Modest Mouse and especially The White Stripes to be triumphs of style over substance.

Can't fault your list, but my own list would add Iron & Wine and Stars of the Lid.

I'm fair certain that Person Pitch will be my #1 for the year, but I'd be hard pressed to rank them after that. "Bros" makes my head spin more every time I hear it.

Challengers doesn't suck, exactly. It's just basically a Newman solo record, not a New Pornographers one. I like Newman fine, but it's false advertising.

For some reason, Sam Beame has never done anything for me. I don't dislike his stuff, but I can't seem to find the same joy all of my friends find it in.

I can see where you're coming at i.e. the New Pornographers. However, even comparing it to Newman's Slow Wonder, I still think it's pretty mundane.

I may have to check out Stars of the Lid. I've heard the name thrown about, but have never checked it out.

White Stripes I could mostly agree with, but the first two MMs were phenomenal. I saw Isaac's guitar playing on those album as substance, but I guess we all don't see it in the same light.

MM I'd give another chance.

I haven't heard a new rock record since the last Hold Steady. Pathetic!

Bah. I don't proselytize when it comes to music. It either clicks or it doesn't. There's nothing to "get" about Beam. He's not an acquired taste, a la Animal Collective or the like. WYSIWYG. He clicked for me from the first note, but I've no problem if he doesn't work for you.

Stars of the Lid = pure delicious drone. I would recommend starting with The Tired Sounds of... first. Sort of like Labradford, except asleep and underwater. Sort of.

Why don't you just sneak into an American Apparel changing room, go to Pitchfork on your iPhone, and jerk off to their reviews?

(good enough?)
