All of this for a small rite, I do every year at this time. The longest night may be for nekkid dancing for some...for me, it is a time to plan for the coming year...

Candles are lit, bread is baked, wine is breathing. The neighbors have come in to wake the sun, and wait for sunrise.

Actually, I'm at Bronn's house, and no-one quite does the solstice like them half Pagan, half Catholic Irishpersons... I'm just gonna watch the dancing, but there's lots of kilt or robe clad dancers milling about the living room right now.

This was the first solstice thing I've ever done, and it was great!

We had a wake for the sun, and there was dancing and munchies and story telling and singing and stuff. Everybody fell asleep pretty much where they were at (except me, I decided that if Bronn was lending us- me and my kittens- a bed, we were going to use it. Then early this morning, before the sun came up, two HP type people and a priest (Catholic) came around and woke everyone up. It was all silent, too. No-one was allowed to speak until the sun came up. Since it was cold and snowing, we didn't go outside to wait for it, we just opened all the curtains and doors. Finally it came up, sort of. It's cloudy enough that all we got was a gradual lightening of the sky. Someone started to sing a hymn to the sun which was followed by an Advent hymn. Then it was communal breakfast and coffee. I think I accidentally got some non decaf though, because my head's spinning.

I claim that it's because of me that they days start getting longer again! I had my b-day yesterday, so you see, when I were born, the universe saw it was a good thing, and decided to give the world more light!!

There is the coolest sage growing out on the dunes at the white sands national monument. I pick some now whenever I go out there. It's really light colored with tiny leaves and when it rains here the whole desert smells of sage.
