Christian writers and readers meet here!

isolated and unrelated

i want you to be okay. i want to know what really went on and is still going on. all i know is the detached bits and pieces you're giving me now. we're communicating but not really. i pray for everything to be okay. i pray it's not as bad now as you always said it was.

Hello all -how are we?

Counting blessings I hope :D
I'm hopeful. Just dropped off a resume for a job that would be a great opportunity for me. Got my first read back on a story from a new editor who insisted that I try to get it published instead of giving it away on Lit (I'm all for that :D ). Plus I have a friend who cares deeply for me...and that's always a good feeling.

Hope everyone else is well. EL, there will be an MP3 of the Church band soon. It's really rockin'. Two weeks and we have already seen an increase in the service attendance. Hopefullly it will just keep getting better. *crosses fingers*

Thought-provoking quote for men

[Please don't read if you're looking for a light and cheery post, or a post about sex.]

I heard this quote on my local Christian radio station, so I bought the book and thought I'd air it here...
A large, silent group of men are convinced that their family would be better off without them. A pastor in California recently told me that he had two calls the previous week from men who confided that exact feeling to him. They both independently said, "Pastor, I just feel my family would be better off financially, emotionally -- in pretty much every way -- if I weren't here." The pastor knew "if I weren't here" meant "if I were dead." He said that this wasn't the only time he'd heard these words. In fact, he hears them all the time, and each man who shares these feelings thinks he is the only one who feels that way.

Would your wife and kids exchange you for enough money to solve their current financial problems? Do you ever feel the people around you would be better off if you quietly stepped away? I have stopped being amazed at the number of men who feel this way, or who feel restless or off course. But what does amaze me is how men can hide their feelings so effectively behind their words and appearance. How can feelings so widespread, so pervasive, and so destructive lie just beneath the surface of so many men, and yet go undetected by their friends and family?

From "Restless Journey" by Marcus Ryan (Harvest House, 2006, p. 19)
I think this is a powerful quote that deserves a thorough solution in a much better book. (Ryan's book has some good parts, but I am only lukewarm about it as a whole.) Can anyone suggest a book that does this well?

I think that formulating the questions in the second paragraph is a good way to see that the answer is an unequivocal NO! (It seems to me that not putting them so directly lets the bad feelings simmer without being confronted.)

Not that I should rely on popular culture for my examples, but a show I recently saw seemed to hammer this point home to me. A (male) city counselor was attacked and raped by his attacker. He struggled with shame and eventually hunted down the attacker vigilante-style. Afterward, he tried to commit suicide by getting a pursuing cop to shoot him, then aiming the gun at himself when that didn't work. The cop talked him out of it with a confrontation like this: "If you're the kind of man who thinks that blowing his head off is the brave thing to do, then maybe you're right - your son would be better off without you."

(Sorry if I bummed anyone out, but I thought that if so many Christian men feel this way, perhaps it needs discussing.)

Curl....my husband is clinically depressed but I'm glad to say his suicidal tendancies only show very arely these days.

I think depression is a big issue worldwide and I think alot of Chritians in particular hide it, because, well they're saved! they shouldn't be depressed! But it doesn't work that way.

interesting qote, i'm sorry to say i don't know any other books on the subject for you though.

Thanks for sharing, EL. I didn't know. Sorry if I brought up a sore subject. I'm glad your husband is getting through with only rare occasions to that extreme. My heart goes out to you both.

Fortunately for me, at this point it is usually just another thing on my daily to-do list: fight temptation, fight laziness, fight depression.

(By the way, EL, I don't plan to turn your thread into a Christian version of the Depression Support thread. Whether or not I get any book recommendations, if the topic doesn't fade out, I'll take it elsewhere. :rose: )

Sorry to hear about your hubby's depression, EL. Hope it all gets better soon. :rose: :rose:

Depression affects us all to a certain degree or another...

Curl, EL and other Litizens; reading your posts I was struck by similarities with myself and people I know. Depression can and does affect us all at one time or another and it's how we deal with it, as you know, which helps us to move thru it.
Having Faith helps me to overcome the normal depression, but I also realise others suffer from clinical depression and for those people simple Faith is not enough. I wish I knew the answers to help, but sadly I don't. All I can offer is support and compassion to those suffering. :rose:

Here's a link which may help when you're feeling like the world is closing in on you and there's no hope.

God speaks

May the light of the Divine surround you
May the love of the Divine enfold you
May the power of the Divine protect you and...
May the presence of the Divine watch over you;
Where ever you are, The Divine is and all is well!
Peace be with you

Cool AV Kym :)

I think Depression is a serious health issue which still isn't taken seriously enough. I think having faith does help, at least a little bit, but a Christian with depression needs the same kind of help as anyone else too.

God's miracles are often worked via non-miraculous ways. :)

beautiful interview. I am one of those that has an uphill battle with depression. The character I identify most with is JOB. Continually tested and constantly losing what I have gained. At least no-one can take away the memories I have gathered. And I have learned that true love doesn't have to be returned. It is the love itself that matters, not what you get for it. Hopefully my new story will be accepted soon. It is still pending.

You are so right about love, Guy. Love is endless in its capacity. And the giving of it is all that really matters. If one doesn't return it, someone else will. Knowing that you are loved is a good start in defeating depression.

And you will find that love abounds in this thread. Stay with us.

A thought......

This message is so powerful I've posted it on another thread. By thinking thoughts which are positive, I believe we can change our realities.
I hope all who read it find it as inspring as I do.

My Words
The thoughts we think and words we speak help create our world and our experiences. With this in mind, we bring more meaning and fulfillment to our lives when our thoughts and words are Spirit-filled.
Let us then choose to think positively and speak words of strength and power, infusing what we say with a belief in the ever-present goodness of God. We convey love and kindness to those around us, knowing that such expressions will be of comfort not only to them but to us also.
Our Spirit-filled thoughts are divine ideas that we share in conversation with others. Our words are magnificent blessings just waiting to be expressed. Divinely inspired words bring blessings into our lives and the lives of those we love.
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”—Proverbs 25:11

Today... I speak words that are divinely inspired affirmations of strength and power.
Nameste m'friends! :rose:
EL, I'll accept your (((hugs))), ain't skeered of catching a cold! :)

Words are so important, thanks for sharing :rose: I know that a positiv word can make my day :)
