The date on the story is the date of publication. Stories can be modified by the author once they've been published, but the process takes a little bit of time. Editors who are not the listed author have no power once the piece is published. Theoretically the site could make changes to a story, I suppose, but to the best of my knowledge that's never happened outside issues where HTML formatting doesn't display correctly due to a site error. The site won't change the content of the story to fit its guidelines, and if a story is submitted with broken formatting they won't fix it.As a reader, I have been wondering, Is date on the story the date of publication or the date of last modification
I guess an embedded question is, Can stories be modified my author, editor or site once it had been published.
Thank you for the response, the good info. Do you know how a reader can see the modification date? I have been reading here for at least two decades. I have a suspicion that some of my earliest favorites have been modernized. The hope is to know rather than guessWhoever has access to your Control Panel can edit your stories.

The easiest way to know that might be to use a web archive (like web.archive.org) and hopefully find an older version of the story. There's no way to see otherwise if the story has been edited; the feature isn't really first-class (there is no interface for it), and is meant mostly for fixing inconsequential stuff like typos.I have a suspicion that some of my earliest favorites have been modernized. There's no indication to readers that a story has been edited. There's little trace for authors either, unless they make a note. I've edited maybe half a dozen stories over the years, but I have no idea when I did it.Thank you for the response, the good info. Do you know how a reader can see the modification date?
