Just published on Lit for the thirteenth time. All you authors out there, which is your favorite among your own stories on Lit? Why is it your favorite? Are there a few stories you can't choose among?

I'm asking these questions about my own works, re-reading them all, and deciding which is mine. I'm not yet sure and may never be.

I'll list three, because I'm bored and I like talking about myself. :) In order of first place, second place, and third place:
  1. It Could Have Been Anyone - Pt. 04 - an installment of my first series after it really gets going. There's a little unreliable narrator stuff and some perspective switching. Also more personal/emotional connections. It's also my highest rated story, at 4.68, which doesn't matter too much but obviously doesn't hurt.
  2. Using the Hall Pass - Pt. 09 - an installment around the middle of my current series. It's in Loving Wives, which is infamous, and the rating on this would be embarrassing in some categories, but I'm enjoying the series anyway and this story seems exemplary of it.
  3. Dancing Naked in the Moonlight? - my Halloween contest entry for this year. I'm not proud of every detail of it, if I ever write sequels to it then I'll also edit and republish this with several changes, but the ideas behind it were very original for me. The characters of this story are more unlike me and people I know than most of my stories, so it's less of an author insert fantasy. There's also some genre-bending, category-crossing stuff, which seems appropriate for a Halloween story.
I also want to mention an as-yet-unwritten story that's next on my list as soon as I finish my current series or get it to a better place to take a break. That's partly because I think it has more potential than all of the above, it's an idea that starts simple but gets very complicated, very quickly, but also just because, forgive me if this sounds too pretentious, the best story is the one that hasn't been written yet.

Since the bar has been at three stories, I'll list mine:

3) Snow Fall in Love (warning, many think FMC is a serious bitch, enough to make them abandon the story. I like her.) I think it's my best written story.

2) Mistress Natasha -- (warning, it's a continuation of a 21 story series, although it can be read in isolation) almost no engagement from the readers, but I liked the story anyways

1) The Important Days -- my best story, hands down. I may go back and clean up the writing at some point because I think I'm a better writer now.

Oh why not? Im bored and have the time 😆

1: The Devil And Angel Em - Not my first attempt at writing something more complicated than a basic sex story, but certainly one of my better efforts, that gave me a character in my She-Demon Cozbi that went on to star in several other supernatural tales.

2: Pornville - my attempt to dabble in as many possible LE categories as reasonably possible in one fantastical fairytale type story.

3: Accidental Nudes - if the other two are too long or convoluted for ya, then here's a short and prime example of one of my more simple direct style sex stories that did much better than I expected, actually.

I love all my stories equally, pretty much. So I'll pick the one that shouldn't work, but somehow does: Into The Night. It's stream of consciousness. It's cyberpunk with only the barest semblance of a plot. It's full of references to early Springsteen songs. And it's 2P POV.

And yet it's rated 4.72. Because somehow it works.
Whew. Stream of consciousness is a bitch to read, really takes it out of you, but that was fun. Excellent world building.

That's a really tough question. They are all my babies, but if I was told they would all be deleted and unretrievable, and I could only save one, it would be Queen of the Roller Derby. Writing it was a joyful experience, the characters came to me so easily. It was the most fun to write, and I'm pleased that it struck a strong emotional a chord with many readers.

Does Poetry count?

The Creation's Lament (Formerly "A Fragile Mind")

I wrote it on a whim one night after coming across a drawing on Deviant Art of a marionette dancing with a puppeteer in front of other discarded marionettes.

It's also spawned a horror story I've been working on for a few years but have never managed to finalize the story in a way that works for me. It's my goal for next year, though.

That was an excellent story, but “While She Watches Them” is my favorite of yours that I’ve read. Loved that one so much! 😀

All among my favorite works of yours, DJ. Good choices!

I'm not a big fan of my stories. I do like my transgender series of tales, that's my Just a Friendly Series. All of my horror stories, and my PI and Vengeance Series.

Why yes, @Erozetta, yes, it does count. Porety counts double for you!

No contest, my first novel: The Story of Nix
Why is it your favorite?
I used to have different favorites that pleased me in different ways, but Nix is head and shoulders above them all. In a way it reflects the best of many of my previous favorites.

It’s not just the scale, it’s also my most accomplished writing to date. The themes (so many themes 😬) are pertinent to the world in 2025, and - despite its many wanderings and later intersections - the plot is taut and the pacing fast enough to not lose the reader. I also am really happy with the novel characters I created, their arcs, and how they interlock with each other. I even threw some humor in among the dystopian darkness.

I was crazy ambitious with what I was trying to do. No one is as surprised as me that I kinda pulled it off 😊.
Are there a few stories you can't choose among?
Used to be sort of top ten territory, but now there is a clear winner.

I get that. I still consider Between Angels And Demons my best overall accomplishment in writing, but its hard to recommend that one to new readers because there's so much they'd need to read in both our A&D stories before they get to that one.

It was a fitting finale (which I then kinda ignored and started writing new A&D stories 🤣).

That's hard, they're all my babies. I still think When The Dark Dresses Lightly is my best one but as favourites I pick two others.

A Dream That I Can Call My Own, because I managed to make my idea work, of letting flashbacks set the emotional pace, becoming fewer and farther between as Charlie heals. And for Charlie, who still lives in my head a little bit. And for the ending, which still makes me tear up.

The Woman In The Spare Room for the beautiful little family I found there, and the reality I poured into it. If there's one story/set of characters that I think I might be able to make into a real novel, it's this one. I love that little trio and I kind of hate myself for what I'm putting them through in the sequel.

For me, it would be The Witches of Eldritch Hollow.

It is a foray into Erotic Horror, a category of story I hadn't thought I would ever write. As I was writing it, it felt thorough to me, including researching various concepts that I hadn't done before.

The correct (if facetious) answer to this is always "the one I'm just about to publish". ;)
Holy shit ain't that the truth. In my case at least it's not even facetious. This is because of all my posted stories, I have no favorites -- I tend to dislike them all, more or less, equally. Allow me to explain...

When I'm done with a story, I really am done with it. By the time I'm finished revising (and revising, and revising, as the case may be), it's lost all novelty for me. After going through the posting process and tracking votes on it, whatever itch I had in my mind that made me type it out in the first place is done and gone. Further, the few times I look back over my posted stories (which is rare), my mind tends to focus on the flaws and not the successes. I see something that I wish I'd written differently, or taken a different slant on, or just don't care for anymore.

I'm not saying that my works are bad. And I'm quite happy when other people rate them highly. It's just hard for me to look at them unbiased and my bias is towards their flaws. I do think I'm generally getting better as I keep writing, so that I'm more favorably disposed towards newer stories than older.

If I had to pick -- I rather like "with iron teeth," even if it's a stretch to say that it should've been posted on this site to begin with. Of the honest erotica/smut stories, perhaps "Catching Up" is my fave. Lastly, there's a story I've been working on and off on. Hopefully it might be completed and posted next year. It's my first Erotic Horror story and I kind of like it; if all goes well with the writing, it might be my favorite to-date. We'll see.

Thanks for the thread topic and congrats on posting your 13th story.

EDIT: just realized that I never answered one of the thread questions as to why these are my favorites. Well... I could be wrong, stroking my own ego, seeing things that aren't there, etc. etc. etc., but in the stories that I like the most, I feel like I'm trying to say something. Nothing wrong with smut, I love smut, wouldn't be here if I didn't, but I think the best stories are the ones that can titillate while move you in other ways; at least make you think about it after the physical pleasure fades away. I also like it when my stories come close to achieving that benchmark of a good story, namely, the human heart in conflict with itself.

Forgive me for going with a series: The Bluebells of 1918.

This is my trilogy set against the backdrop of the First World War. An Allied pilot is shot down over Germany, escapes POW camp, and is hidden by a glamorous Belgian MILF. Sparks fly but the Germans are scouring the area in search of him.

A shitload of research went into it and it has done exceedingly well. I’m proud of it.

[My other favorite is my series that is currently being released right now, of course. 😂]
