I tend to think they did know, but like a lot of pop culture stuff, the movie is not particularly 'even' in terms of depth or subtlety. It has enough ham-fisted moments to provide ammunition to people who want to analytically diminish the best parts as well. My point, I suppose, is that those best parts are still worth acknowledging, even for people underwhelmed by the whole.
