23 Emotions people feel, but can’t explain

One that definitely influences my writing - Anemoia - nostalgia for a time period you never experienced.

I have experienced that most frequently when writing stories set in the 1950s and 1960s, contrasting with for example 1990s set stories where I feel nostalgia from past memories.

Does anyone else have anemoia?

I have anemoia for the 1980's and 1990's...

I fiddled with a story about finding love at the Blockbuster Video a while ago, and I got very conflicting reports of what it smelled like🤣

I've written 1980s and 1990s stories that lean heavily into tropes that were popular around this time with Generation X, for example a Summer Loving story a few years ago 'Tonya, Tiffany & the Twins' which is a slacker surfer dude comedy set in 1989, when slacker movies were pretty common.

Unfortunately there couldn't have been too many Gen X or people with nostalgia for the late 1980s among the IT readers, as they hated the story and said how stupid it was.

Welp I thought I was one of the young'uns in this place, but apparently you've got me beat. 😄

I do have anemoia for the 80s. I think growing up in the 90s and 00s, watching a lot of 80s movies, that whole synthwave thing is just ingrained in my psyche. But since it comes from movies, it's really the US in the 80s I have it for, not here.

Oh…ok, just watch this training video and come back to me with any questions.

  • I am obsessed with Blockbuster Girl's hair
  • Why is this so sexually charged
  • "Hi Kristin, how's it going?" "Pretty bogus actually..."
  • Video man is so creepy
  • I think I have my On The Job 2026 concept now, and it's possible that it belongs in Erotic Horror 😬

I’d like to propose an addition, and in honor of the abundance of Germanic loan words in the list:

Künstlicheintelligenzsschamangst

Or the slightly anglicized version: AI-schamangst

AI-shame-angst, or the fear of rejection for using AI.

Someone who speaks proper German please let me know if I’m on to something here.

Yeah, for the 80s. The 2180s, that is, not the 1980s. Sure, nothing can go wrong in the- ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL!

You probably need to remove the first e and instead stick it before Scham to comply with German phonotactics. But other than that, seems good to me — except I haven’t really used German in like a decade, so copious application of NaCl is recommended.
