could anyone advise me on the specifics of why a story i tried to submit is being sent back?

(i'm not entirely sure how to word this without it sounding like im being defensive or trying to be like "but other people do this tho!!!" so please just keep in mind that that isn't my intention and that i'm genuinely wanting actually change whatever's wrong with the story, i just don't know what it is.)

it's only 700 words and i'm struggling to pick out which part is causing it to be sent back.

the stated reason is age play / underage content. but i really honestly don't understand which part is giving that. im actually really confused. i know underage and underage roleplay isn't allowed. but so many stories ive read here are far far closer to that line than anything i wrote in this 700 words.

it's a pretty generic story that reads exactly like loads of others here. i actually wrote something extremely generic and safe on purpose as my first submission. the issue must just be one specific way i've worded something, i assume? but i don't know what. i'd like to change it, but don't know what to change.

could anyone advise me on what kind of thing might be causing the problem? i'm not sure if i'm allowed to attach the story here since it's not allowed to be posted on the site, but i can link to a google doc if anyone wants to read it over

sorry if i'm being stupid at all, i'm kind of new to this site and to posting writing online.

What do you mean by "closer to the line"? The line is 18 years old.

18 years and one day is fine.

17 years and 364 days is not.

The line is very, very fine and there is no gray area in it.

You can reference characters under 18 but there can't be any sexual content involved at all.

I'm curious what this means. Is that a line you flirted with, just in your opinion not as closely as others? That others may have gotten away with something isn't necessarily a guarantee that you will, if you've pushed the envelope on policies.

Not saying you have, not having read your story I obviously don't know, but if there's any ambiguity about your characters being of age then I'd say that's your answer.

i think you misunderstand what im talking about. it is specifically stated that the character is 18, i don't think anyone would be stupid enough to not do that and then wonder why it's being rejected for underage content. by "closer to the line", im talking about stories ive read that have a character act and be treated so much like an actual child that it makes me uncomfortable. whereas i'm not even into that stuff, so im not sure how anyone could get that from what i wrote.

If your characters are clearly over 18 -- in addition to their ages explicitly stated, they act like and are treated as adults -- then your best bet is probably to resubmit with a note to admins making your case. And for good measure maybe just give your story a quick once-over for anything that might have given someone a different impression.

Any wording that implies a character is a minor is liable to get the axe.
again with not wanting to sound defensive but not knowing what else to say: does any of that wording imply age? genuine question. i don't see how it does, but im pretty autistic so i take words quite literally.

i also understand that a lot of this is automated and other people getting away with something doesn't mean everyone will, but this feels incredibly ridiculous to me with the sheer volume of stories using far more extreme and sometimes not even subtle things that actually do imply underage. like i chose to write something in this kink because i thought it was the safest choice going by the content here. i can't believe how wrong i apparently was about that aha

Your best bet is to have someone look it over for you. No one is going to be able to diagnose the issues based on a conversation here.

not specifically, but there's a few "sweet girl" "little princess" and other such things in there. is it worth trying to change or remove them and trying again?
If she's 18, acting like a child, and being called "sweet girl" thats probably why.

I had a story that, in my head, was about an adult. But nothing in the story stated/referenced the character's age, a couple other characters called the MC "kid", and the MC had an underage (14yo) friend. The story is a forced-proximity romance about a prisoner, so the MC doesnt "act like an adult" in any discernible way (no references to a job, graduating school, or other friends who were of age).

So when I submitted it here I went back, removed most of the "kid" nicknames, and had the character retort "Im not a kid, Im 23" to one of them, just to be on the safe side.

Yes - while it's not implausible that some parent would refer to their 18 yo daughter as their "little princess", since it's a safe bet that a lot of the work is being done by automated tools, it's also a safe bet that wording like that would cause it to get the axe without a live human even laying eyes on it.

See above - you're right. Some stories WILL slip through the cracks with far worse in it. But that just means that it didn't get flagged by the tool(s) for whatever reason. No one is reading every line of every story that gets approved.

It likely isn't the words used, but how you phrased them.

As others have said, ask someone here to review your story and you'll stand a better chance of identifying the issues.

does any of that wording imply age?
Could the wording have been mistaken to imply age, at a laughably superficial and woefully inadequate glance?

That's probably what happened, and is the right way to approach fixing this. Make sure there is a lot less room for mistakes of interpretation. The reviewer is not reading your whole story, they're only reading the line which the automated grepper found which had an underage-seeming word in it.

Your story is short, see if you can get a volunteer Editor (who knows the ins and outs of Literotica) to read it and perhaps shed light as to why it was sent back. Then when you make changes and resubmit you can add the note stating that fact

This does sound like "age play" to me. A character who is literally over 18 still cannot be infantilized and treated as an underage-cosplay object.

This.

You can't say, "Tiffany was 18" then have her running around with a teddy bear acting like a little kid.

This x2.

Always make sure your characters are waaay out of puberty. They need to be adults, with fully developed bodies. They can be young, but they should not even be close to "prepubescent" even if you explicitly claim they're over 18.

Meaning, it's not enough to write about a tiny waif who looks like a child, but then blithely state she's 22.

There have been authors who wrote under-age stories, published them on other sites with the characters' ages explicitly stated as 16/etc., then resubmitted them to Literotica with the numbers changed to "18" but everything else still suggesting under-age. Anything that looks like that sort of nudge-nudge-wink-wink risks rejection.

I just submitted my Winter Holiday story and one of the major themes is Memories. My 27 year old MFC wakes on Christmas morning in her old bedroom at her mom’s house. She hasn’t lived there in years.

On a shelf are ‘The Toys of Christmas Past’ - Beanie Baby cats, a doll, etc

It would be ironic if I got rejected for that by some AI checker, especially if it might get approved if the ‘toys’ were BDSM toys instead!

The checker doesn't seem to flag as much stuff as people think. One of my stories features two people at a camp with their kids.
There is plenty of talk about the kids and doing camping things with them before the adults manage to get some alone time.
Sailed right through.
