I am trying to post a series of chapters to my story: The Swing at the Gates of Eternity.
I read the instructions. The first was to press a button called Series. I have a button
called Series(Beta). That's different. I was able to get 4 chapters into the series by
starting a new story each time with the chapters added to title. But this device no longer
seems to work.

The Series function has been in beta for years. It's still the only Series function there is.

I'm not clear on what you did for the first 4 that doesn't work for later ones. If you haven't, go into Series beta and make the series manual, and you'll be able to add all chapters to it. I have found that adding a story before publication actually results in it never being added, so I now add them as soon as possible after publication.

I submitted

The Swing at the Gates of Eternity

then submitted

(Chap 2) The Swing at the Gates of Eternity

then

(Chaps 3,4) The Swing at the Gates of Eternity

and then tried

(Chaps 5,6) The Swing at the Gates of Eternity

but I was not allowed to type past

(Chaps 5,6) The Swing at the Gates of

I could not get the entire title in.

Actually, the first time I sent in (Chaps 5,6)The Swing at the Gates of Eternity
it was published as Chaps(5,6). Nobody can find it. Then I tried again. I think I see
the trouble. I'd already sent in (Chaps 5,6)The Swing at the Gates of eternity
and they didn't allow hot again. Okay. So the question is why did they only publish
Chaps (5,6)? They didn't do that before.

I might be able to get around the problem by trying to publish Chaps(*, 5, 6) The Swing at the Gates of Eternity,
but then Literotica might publish Chaps(*,5,6) and I'ver got the same problem

It looks like readers are beginning to see Chaps(5,6). It could well be that my assumption that
the readers of the earlier chapters could not find it is wrong. I hope that's right. If this is the case, I'm
beginning to learn things I didn't know.

Yeah, you have to keep the max length of the field in mind when you pick a title. Luckily (for me) I like two word or shorter titles ("Wager", "Pranked").

Thanks very much. I'll try Chaps(7,8) for the next two chapters. It looks like readers of the earlier stuff
find The Swing at the Gates of Eternity via my name, not the title. I'll try that now.

When you write a new story, you can have it automatically start in one of your series. It's weird though.

Go to New Story. Put in your tags, upload your file. Title it. Choose categories. Write your subheading. Write your love letter to the mods. Click that you've accepted the terms & conditions.
Whole thing's done, right? There's no choice to add it to a series anywhere on there, right?
OK, now comes the secret part. Hit Preview & Publish. This goes to the next screen that would let you send it to the mods. Instead, click the button to edit it some more. This takes you right back to the screen you were on, there's some scary looking yellow text, but everything you selected stays selected. But there's a new thing. Right above the options there's an extra choice to add it to a series that wasn't there before. Click on that and add it to your series. Now hit preview and publish and go through with it this time.

It's like really obviously a bug, and it definitely should not work like that, but it does work. So I submit everything like that, and now I don't have to mess with adding stories to my series after they come out. And importantly, they are part of the series the very moment they appear on the site.

Thank you very much. What works is what I was looking for.
Another point, though. When I get to "title it," the program won't accept the entire title. Annie explained that.
So what I did was put in Chaps 7,8 and said: publish.
So far so good. What I was worried about was that readers would not be able to find it, but it looks
like (from what is going on with Chaps 5,6) that readers find the chapters 5 and 6 via my name. Of course
it cannot be accessed via the title. However, you and Annie give me hope. If just Chaps 7,8 work, then
I will continue with that (Unless I hear from you). If it doesn't work I will go to your solution, but I am still worried
about this too long title business.

Laurel has the ability to stretch the title field, I have read here. Maybe (especially once the series is all published) you could ask her to make it work?

--Annie

Thanks, Annie. I will continue with my method and keep my fingers crossed. (Unless
I should contact Laurel, and, of course, how do I do that?)
I will be publishing another story with a one word title. The problems should vanish.
