The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

It's cold and snowing here. We might get up to two inches. Since it's 28 degrees Fahrenheit, it's starting to stick to the roads. I'm just going to stay inside and stay warm today.

There's fresh brewed coffee and the teapot is hot. You may want to drink some hot tea today. There are donuts and cookies on the counter along with my first attempt at a pumpkin pie this year. Don't get too excited, I used the canned pumpkin pie filling and didn't make it from scratch.

I'll be over in the corner next to the fireplace working on my new story. Twenty four days to get it in for the Winter Holiday contest. I can do it if my Muse doesn't raise a fuss ...

I'm not offended by canned pumpkin. It's been a staple in our household ever since I remember, and it's always a delight, especially with whipped cream. I'll find out in a couple of days if I have to put it on my no-no list. So much is right now. I miss pizza.

It didn't get as cold here last night as predicted, only down to 30°. We have flurries in the short-term forecast, unlikely to stick as it'll be above freezing by the time it starts. Looking at the NWS radar right now, it looks like it will miss us altogether. That's fine with me, C has a doctor appointment this afternoon, so both of us have to change out of our bathrobes.

70s by the end of the week!

My wife did it from scratch once and decided it was a great use for canned filling.

I made butternut pies once and decided I'd do it again, but not with a vegan recipe.

No snow here for now. We might have a storm blow through next weekend. So far, it hasn't been a good year for ski resorts.

But cider ....

Last I checked last year at the one place I can get something close to real cider and even that isn't a mill where they press on site ... $11 something a gallon. It stayed there. I'll do without.

Probably won't even check this year.

I used to think $5/gallon was high.

I grew up where we had at least five real mills within an hour or so drive. Crates of apples outside, you could watch them get dumped onto the conveyor and into the press, then watch the cider pour out into vats they used to fill jugs. Pressed apple pulp was moved off and used to make apple butter and other things.

The scent of fresh baked spiced donuts filled the air and they were still warm when served.

Yes! Frankenstein, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi.
I'm so glad to hear that it's good! I was planning to watch it tonight but maybe I'll start over lunch. I went through a gothic horror phase in high school where I read all of the big ones, including this one. Which very quickly morphed into my Anne Rice / emo goth chick phase. all evidence of which has been destroyed (clothes sent to and rejected by the homeless shelter, makeup donated to the local clown academy, and my pusher/dealer from Hot Topic was buried next to Jimmy Hoffa years ago)

I got swiped with water from a bus going through a puddle today. Luckily it was just round the corner from home.

Found a new favourite restaurant this weekend, and just been recommended a good lunch joint near home, so that's good. Health is shit again but just tedious, not dangerous.

Girlfriend is booking us events for next year, as a way to convince the Grim Reaper to bog off for the duration. If it comes down to a staring match, my money's on her. Also she bites.

I did a draft not for Winter Holidays, got feedback, and am now rewriting it for Christmas. I'll likely take a lot of material back out, as it's me self-indulgently processing stuff (see above paragraph). Also a beta reader advised I shouldn't, and my perverse nature instantly rebelled.

I’ve given up using canned pumpkin. It’s convenient, but if I’m tak8ng the time for a pie, I’ll do it properly and go with, yes, butternut squash. (And eggs, cream, butter, etc. One can no more have a proper vegan pumpkin pie than one can have kosher bacon.)

They do have vegan bacon, but I wouldn't eat it. I believe it would be kosher, but I'm no expert on that.

I don't find it all that horrifying, but I have a high tolerance for scary and gross. It isn't overly bloody, though.
It was pretty decent. They had some really strong actors and the story itself is iconic, and that made up for some of the cheesiness. Although I appreciated a lot of the cheesiness ... when he's assembling the monster and the movie is playing this really upbeat, happy, Disney-style classical music made me laugh.

The vegan butternut pie was good but for the crust, which came out solid instead of flaky.

NW, I respect you very much, but this is one hill I will die on.

Mind you, I was recently treated to a celiac-cleared quiche where the normal crust was replaced by hash browned potatoes. It was remarkably good. I haven’t had the chance to try it myself, but maybe over the holidays.
