Good evening my dear colleagues,
I have another one from the "Midwest Dee's Book of Awfully Inane but Fleetingly Amusing Questions" -

What, in your opinion, is the easiest category to write a story for and, in opposition, the hardest category?
Respectfully always curious,
D.

If you want a more robust answer, I'd hazard a guess that Humor/Satire would be the toughest, at least in terms of getting broad appeal. A lot of people think a lot of other people aren't nearly as funny and clever as they think, and generally aren't shy about saying so, especially on the internet. And are entries to H/S supposed to also be erotic? Opinions seem to vary, which can add to disgruntlement from unfulfilled expectations.

Romance and romance for both easiest and hardest for me personally. Writing about love is pretty fun. Writing about love and trying to make it sexy can be difficult, at least for me. Sometimes I kinda just want to jump past the sex and get back to the plot, and that can ruin my focus. Also, adhering to romance expectations on a site like Literotica when my stories are inherently a little quirky is a challenge.

Romance might be the easiest. It doesn't require sex scenes.

I think humor might be the toughest. Having a visual image can help sell the humor, however here, we're stuck with simple black and white type.

@dirk2024,
Curious you should mention humour. As a self-imposed challenge I am working on a story with "dark humour" included at the moment. Writing outside of my comfort zone is actually making me, I think, write better.

By the way, I couldn't imagine succeeding at a LW story but I find it quite easy to write Sci-Fi.
Respectfully,
D.

Honestly? I think Exhibitionist / Voyeur is the easiest category to write for.

All you need is any variation of someone getting / being naked and someone watching. And there are a million ways to that.

And unlike other popular categories like I/T or Loving Wives, theres far less convoluted rules or plot points you need to hit beyond the two I mentioned for fans of the category to be happy.

Hardest Category: A good story.
Easiest Category: A bad story.

I agree. You've not only got the, "What you think is funny, I think is lame," but you've also got the vastly different cultural differences from one country to the next, let alone language differences.

I second E&V. A very appreciative audience, and it's often good, clean fun. Well, as long as the voyeur isn't an obsessed stalker.

Hardest? Of the ones I've written in, Chain Stories took the most effort.

Easiest? Lesbian sex. "Write what you know," and all that.

Hardest? Non-erotic. By and large, people come here for the sex, so writing a story for this site that doesn't include it and still hits is a real challenge.

Disagree. Writing it is easy, it's getting people to read it that's damn near impossible

I'll repeat what Bagaman already said, because I wholeheartedly agree. Good humor and satire are difficult to write. All those numerous, terrible puns we see daily are a testament to how hard humor and satire would be for most of us.

Adding to what I said above, I'll share an example inspired by my avatar.

I guess many of you are familiar with The Wheel of Time, a series of books written by Robert Jordan. I'll also add, just in case, that the last three books were written by Brandon Sanderson, based on Jordan's notes and scripts.

Anyway, when asked who was the hardest character to write, Sanderson easily replied - Mat. Some of you might know that Mat is a humorous character. Also, when asked who was the easiest, Sanderson replied - Perrin. Again, some of you might know that Perrin is a somewhat dull character, and I say that with all the love I have for the series.

I would think it often depended on the author's personal tastes. But it would vary depending on how much the author viewed themselves as primarily a writer, vs primarily a purveyor of erotica.

I mean, literally, for you personally dear colleague?
Easiest: BDSM
Surprised myself: One in Erotic Couplings, and two in GM (really EC and BDSM)
Hardest: Audio, Chain stories, Fan fiction & celebrities, Illustrated, Mind Control, Non-English, NonHuman, Sci Fi & Fantasy, Transgender

Easiest: In the last few months, the easiest story was my humor one. (It's terrible, but I had fun.)

Hardest: Any Romance with characters who don't want to fall in love with each other. (I had one of these and another where I couldn't get them to stop arguing -- my two most recent Romances)

I find it natural to write in (alphabetically), Anal, BDSM, Exhibitionist (less so Voyeur)*, Fetish, Lesbian, SciFi & Fantasy.
the hardest category?
Current winner (loser?) Erotic Horror. But I’m not always sure what Erotic Couplings wants either.

Neutral: Mature, Group Sex (which seems to want something different to my gang bang stories), Romance, Toys & Masturbation.

I don’t do the two non-con categories and only my own very specific takes on T/I and LW.

I’ve only written 750 word stories in Interracial, Trans / Crossdressing, Non-human, and Gay Male.

Easiest for me: Erotic Horror, Erotic Couplings, Romance, Fetish, Non-human, Incest/Taboo, Exhibitionist/Voyeur, and Mature.

Hardest: Humor & Satire, Loving Wives, Transgender (specifically not making it a fetishization of people), Interracial (same as previous, not wanting to fetishize people), Group sex (so many limbs and appendages and pronouns to keep track of, I just don't have the patience for it), and Chain Stories.

Category I most enjoy writing long form: Erotic Horror
Category I most enjoy writing short form: Fetish

Category I least enjoy writing long form: Humor & Satire (It would end up along the lines of Wristcutters: A Love Story, only enjoyable by me and one other weirdo.)
Category I least enjoy writing short form: Romance

Category I'm thankful doesn't exist here: Erotic Musicals. (Though I would probably read/listen to this category extensively.)
