Usually translates like "I'm reluctant to admit it but" even though it gets used too often to really count as reluctance (a concept we're all extremely familiar with).

As far as I have been able to figure out, "low key" basically means the same thing as "totally" did 40 years ago, except with the added self-consciousness.

Or, more likely, an ironic pretense of self-consciousness.

Okay, I went and looked up lowkey, because I was getting confused about the meaning when I was sure I knew this one. It essentially means: chill, on the down-low, secretly, calm. It's a very complicated word, and yes it is one word.

This totally fails because there isn’t any special “kind of people” who are talking this way. Whether you yourself had a particular demographic in mind or not, there simply isn’t one which the language we’ve been talking about belongs to, or even stereotypes anymore. It’s everywhere.

Appropriation is a whole separate topic, but in 2025 these particular phrases aren’t even stereotypical of anyone.

That doesn’t mean everyone everywhere is using them. But unless the demographic in question is “people who aren’t like [whoever],” the entire demographic/stereotype push-back is moot.

I used to have two friends who ended their sentences (spoken) with "as such"

For example, "We should consider changing over to these new ones, as such."

As SUCH AS WHAT, what the f**k is "as such"? FFS...!

Due to my age, I think I can hazard a go at dating it: A "wank" used to mean, in the UK, a "jape" or a "wizard wheeze" or a lark or a dodge.

When "Roger the Dodger" appeared in the Beano comics, one of its rivals, the Dandy, included "Wanker Watson", who got up to mischief.

It was quietly changed to "Winker Watson" some time in the early 1960s.

"Queer" had lost its original meaning by 1969, but I remember one kid in our year who was a little less socialized than us, still using it to mean "odd".
