Any birdwatchers?

They were common at my grandfather's cottage when I was small. Later (much), the Boss and I got within a few yards in a canoe, which is easy enough if you take it slow. After eyeing us for maybe a minute, it vanished, to resurface a hundred yards away. Lovely creatures.

And that is a great photo!

Wait a minute . . . you were watching loons with Bruce Springsteen? That's pretty cool.

The sandhill cranes are back. I heard them first, earlier today; there's no mistaking that distinctive call. Then I scanned the sky and saw a flock of about 50 hundreds of feet in the air in a rough V shape, flying south to find their winter quarters.

@SimonDoom,
A bit like the comings and goings of Canadian Geese up here.

I remember my wife asked me one day, while we were listening to a noisy flight high above, "Are they Geese?" she asked.
"Yeah" I said.
"What kind?" She asked
"Canadian by the sound of their accent." I shot back.

...and I still have that burning question, is it true that Loons call out in significant numbers when someone dies? I swear, I read that someplace. Wish I could remember/find where!
Deepest respects,
D.

I saw this is a poem somewhere, probably 40 or 50 years ago. Maybe something by Longfellow? It's too far down into the recesses of an old brain to dig that out.

“Someone,” who?

One of their loon buddies? Could be true.

A person? Maybe if it happens right in front of them, idk

Beyond that, I don’t think there’s anything supernatural about loons.
