Personal Style

Do you have a personal style? How would you describe it? How did you craft your personal style? I am thinking a lot of how you present yourself (clothing, home decor, way of being) but it could also be how you carry yourself online - things that are symbolic or specific to you. If you don't have a personal style, why not? What holds you back from expressing yourself more? Is there a style you wish you could pull off? Have you ever undertook a major change in your personal style?
My personal style (to the extent that I have one) is dorky-casual. Usually jeans and a nerdy t-shirt. Today's shirt is The Green Dragon Inn, Bywater. When I'm working, I have to keep things a lot more formal, but I do many, many pairs of nerdy, artistic, pop-culture-y socks that I can wear, since the rest of my work clothes are very rigid and not at all conducive for personal expression.

There isn't really a style I wish I could pull off? I'll wear whatever I like usually, and if it works it works, and if it doesn't who gives a fuck? The only thing really holding me back is that I can't afford everything I wish I could wear. I'd probably be a sucker for tailored three-piece suits if I had the money for them.

The only major change in personal style that I can remember is going from middle school to high school. Started wearing sweatpants less often and jeans more often. That's about all I can think of.

I guess I do? Or at least, I try to keep my clothes coherent so that I can interchange them pretty well. I like the idea of capsule wardrobes - where everything goes with everything else and you can make many outfits from a few pieces. Not that I’d say my style is minimalist - I like funky prints and colorful things too much to be one of those sleek people who only wear three colors. I do sometimes wish I could pull that off because it looks so put together but I would get bored really quickly.

I think I just crafted it by paying attention to what I like, what I feel comfortable in, and what I think is flattering on me. I’m an apple shape, so the flattering part is hard - clothes really aren’t designed for us.

I don’t think I’ve undertaken a major revision of my style - it’s more evolved as I’ve gotten more comfortable with myself and my likes. I used to be more concerned about what was fashionable but now it just has to look good to me.

Clothing style is very boring, blend in, mid western. Blue jeans and a plain tee of just about any cool color. Part of this is practical, as just about any day I could end up ruining a shirt or pants with various things. Part of this is that I feel comfortable wearing it. On line, I think I'm about the same. Boring blend in cool colors! 🤣

My home decor (or at least what I want it to be) wouldn't be much different, other than I prefer high quality items. I'll pay more for quality made products, almost to the point of "stupid more". But those things tend to last longer, and I know some will be passed down to future generations. Some of my home decor items I prefer to manufacture myself. There's still list to work through, and some will be amazing when done. My hope is they stand out on their own. I'm ashamed to admit this, but I'm proud when people comment about the house being the nicest one in the area. I hope they realize it's sweat equity, and not really just speinding $$$ on it.

Have you ever undertook a major change in your personal style?
No, not really. Maybe this is a problem???

I was going to join the several others saying I don’t really have a specific style, because I’ve never really thought about my clothes or how I dress. I don’t know much about styles or fashion in general.

But then I remembered that a few years ago when I had met someone new and they commented that they really liked that my style was so feminine. It didn’t make much sense to me because I don’t think I am particularly feminine, but I suppose I do wear dresses and heels a bit more often than women usually do where I live. I think the dresses I wear are usually quite un-feminine: graphic patterns, simple cuts, no frills, black-white-gray-navy with some splash of “real” color occasionally, mostly in the summer.

So yeah, maybe I do have a style even if it’s not the product of a conscious decision or something that I use to express myself.

I also wear a lot of jeans and t-shirts type of clothing, or jeans and sweaters as the season dictates. My tees can be a little more whimsical at times, with actual colors or prints, but in general my clothes are very plain and consist of non-colors.

My underwear on the other hand is where I let loose these days, I suppose. Hello, all colors of the rainbow and frills and such. I’ve never thought about it, but my outer wear and underwear are really two different worlds.
Is there a style you wish you could pull off? Have you ever undertook a major change in your personal style?
Nah, I don’t think so. I’ve also never changed my style much. I’d never want to wear anything that would make me stand out or actually tell something about who I am. I want to blend in and be forgettable and people who have a strong personal style usually are not forgettable.

Personal Style

Do you have a personal style?
In my clothing, not as much as I'd like. But it's something I'm working on. (thus the question!)
How would you describe it? How did you craft your personal style? I am thinking a lot of how you present yourself (clothing, home decor, way of being) but it could also be how you carry yourself online - things that are symbolic or specific to you.
So currently, because life is very busy, I feel like I'm always in work clothes (some variation of scrubs) or comfy clothes (yoga pants/jeans and ironic tshirt). Whenever I do get dressed up to go somewhere I feel like that's where I'm realizing that I'm at a stage in my life where everything feels ... inauthentic. For so long I had to worry about things I could afford and/or things that would fit (much harder when you aren't a standard size!) but now things are slightly more available and I get to have more choice.

My ideal style and something I'm slowly working towards is a style I'd like to call.... witchy kindergarten teacher. I'll let you imagine what that might be.

I live in the south where the prevailing style is very Farmhouse - Live, Love, Laugh - Bless This Mess - and if that's your style, no shade, at all. It is not mine. We are more mid-century modern/dark academia - dark colors and thoughtful little weirdsies. (sounds like me, eh?) Around the start of the year, I took down all the big box store, random, hand me down generic art and I'm slowly (very slowly because artists deserve to be paid and I am not a rich gal) replacing it with prints I really love and feel important for me to have.

Being intentional as I get older is a goal.

I do think I get in my head about doing anything too dramatic in my personal style. When you are in a body that is outside the cultural norm there is a tendency to want to blend in and not be perceived. Not saying that's right - AT ALL - but it's definitely something I struggle with. Direct attention of any kind gives me palpitations so I'm trying to be a little braver. Never to old to evolve eh?

To the best of my knowledge, their special undergarments don't involve any use of bark or bark-like materials....
Oh gosh do the Scientologists wear fancy knickers too?!? I thought it was just the Mormons. Damn... as a retired Christian, I feel very left out of the "wesr these special panties to prove your devotion" conversation. <pout>
