Car suburbs were a failed experiment from the last century. Forcing people to drive everywhere was great for the oil and car industries, but private cars turned out to be an ecological disaster, not to mention the fact that many American cities were gutted to build car infrastructure. Entire neighborhoods were razed to build highways and parking lots.

The way forward is to redirect public spending on car infrastructure to buses and trains. Convert lanes that are currently used for on-street parking into dedicated bus and bike routes. Bring back streetcars. Impose heavy penalties on careless drivers who kill pedestrians.

It will take decades to undo the damage that the private car has done to American cities, but European and Japanese cities can be used as models for how we can get rid of traffic and make our cities easier to get around in.

Dont forget about bicycles and cargo bikes. In Europe we do just fine without owning a car and so does the rest of the world's population.

Crime rates vary considerably between the races. Poverty is no excuse for crime. It is not even an explanation.

During the early 1980's I lived and worked in downtown San Jose, California. During that time the area was engulfed by Vietnamese refugees from the Communist takeover in Vietnam. Most of them were desperately poor. They were also good people. They took any job they could find and obeyed the law. Vietnamese teenagers did not spend their days harassing their teachers. They respected their teachers and tied to learn, even though most had problems with English. They did not spend their nights getting into trouble. They did their homework. They had spent their lives in war zones and refugee camps. They had every alibi for crime and moral degeneracy. They needed no alibies.

I would often get off work at 10:00 pm and walk three miles through what was becoming Little Saigon to get to my apartment. I was perfectly safe. If I walked through the inner city of where I live now beginning at 10:00 pm I might be murdered for $10 in my wallet. If I did that on a regular basis I would be killed.

During the 1960's the civil rights legislation was passed. The War on Poverty was declared. Poverty did decline because of economic growth and because welfare payments became more generous and easier to qualify for because of War on Poverty programs. The prison population declined. The crime rate doubled.

From 1980 to 2000 the prison population increased. Poverty increased because of cuts in welfare and because the economy became more competitive. The crime rate declined.

European countries have less poverty than we do and lower crime rates. With the exception of Italy and Greece they have less government debt per gross domestic product.

Eugenics has not been debunked any more than The Bell Curve has. Compter technology and automation ae reducing the number of jobs that can be learned by someone with an IQ less than 100. While this is happening those people are having more children than people with IQ above 100.

It was Sunday and I was out in the ‘bubs at a ballet rehearsal, thank God. The shooter used an AK-47. Better gun laws wouldn't have helped this. It's not legal to sell fully automatic weapons anywhere in the country, but he got one anyway.
