Not sure if I'm the only one, but I live for comments, even the bad ones (especially the bad ones) on my stories. I have a song with a 2.86 Rating and 57 Comments, and another currently with a 4.6 Rating and 1 Comment, and I gotta say I get more from the 2.86 Rated story. I get no real satisfaction from a high Rating, but a comment that says how I'm a bad writer and that someone absolutely hates my characters .. I absolutely love the Comments like that .. that comment tells me someone read the whole story and cared enough about the character to hate them. A 5 star rating and no comment tells me nothing in comparison.

Just curious if I'm the only one.

Not the only one! I will just leave this comment here (on your commentary on comment) to, I hope, bring you cheer!

I had an ongoing discussion under my first series whether my bdsm scenario is realistic and whether the relationship has a future after the dommes betrayal. People genuinely cared about those characters.

It was nice to follow these readers and see what they took away from the story.

Guessing the 2.86 57 is in Loving wives?

If you don't take them personally, the comments can be funny as hell.

But your other example shows the sad fact that the trolls are far more likely to speak up than the good readers.

Comments are great but its not always good to expect them because they are few and far between considering how many read the story.

haha .. of course it's in Loving Wives! People hate the woman .. people hate the man .. people want the man to hurt/kill the woman .. they all hate me for writing it. And I can't get enough of that!

I know that, when most of the moderation seemed to happen over night, it was always nice to wake up to a comment or two. It was the one good thing about posting in LW, they were not shy about sharing their opinions. I have never gotten comments like that one LW story.

I've always felt that people negatively comment for 2 reasons. The 1st is extremely selfish, they want the story to go where they want it to go; and if it doesn't, a negative comment. The 2nd reason is based on the construction of the story - grammar and spelling errors (IMHO, lazy errors), plot and character development, etc. I intentionally omitted the trolls because they don't matter.

The relationship between the writer and the reader is a total power exchange with the writer deciding on 1 of 2 choices - write what moves them or kowtow to the reader. IOW, artistic integrity vs audience appeasement.

YMMV

The solution is to have bland and middle-of-the-road tastes. I write exactly what I want, for instance, and I rarely get any negative comments.

That's the thing .. I never intended to write any Loving Wives stories. I submitted my first story (Sci-Fi/Fantasy) and waited 2 weeks and nothing. So I wrote something that was swimming around in my head .. and I felt it fit in Loving Wives. I submitted that and it was approved in 24 hours. And that's the one with 57 comments. Finally the Sci-Fi was approved and that one is 4.22⭐ and 3 comments. That's why I started this conversation .. the stuff I love writing .. no comments. The stuff I write because I'm bored or impatient .. tons of comments!

SF&F has become a strange category to publish in. There are authors who still get plenty of views and comments, but it seems like they're all for "Book 7, Vol. III, Ch. 24c". From my superficial reading (AKA: in my uninformed opinion), the emphasis seems to be on romantasy-meets-never-ending-soap-opera.

But if you're willing to settle for one or two thousand views, you can still get a high vote-to-view ratio, and ditto comment-to-view ratio. At least, I do with grimdark sword & sorcery.

That's a very healthy outlook on the situation and I'll say you'll likely have a far more satisfying writing career than someone who gets depressed when readers suggest the story end in pregancy and then delete all their work.

Votes have been very slow to accumulate for my dark fairy tale entry. Overall positive, but still under 10 on day 3. I don't have much to compare it to, it's my first in that category and my first non-contest entry. But... that seems slow. I'm guessing people don't like my wordy first paragraph and are bailing early -- thankfully by and large not leaving a fresh steaming 1* on their way out.

Write a cheating wife story where the husband is thoroughly humiliated and the wife and her lover get away with it.
Submit it to Loving Wives.
Take cover....
That's what I'm saying! I have 3 such stories on LW and the comments are very strongly negative .. and I love every one of them. Like I said, even the worst comments tell me they read my story, and felt strongly enough about it to make a comment. That's all I could ask for!

Enjoy some of these. This story is close to 11 years old, nothing has changed.
