I watched All The President's Men recently (RIP Robert Redford) and Civil War too. Neither of them seem particularly likely outcomes for America's current political division. So I got to thinking about the actual historical precedents...
...with them in mind, and looking ahead a few years to the transfer of power in America, which situation do you think would be more likely to unite the country after Trump is done?
- the Syrian option: flees to Russia, abandoning minor officials to their fate.
- the Portuguese option: falls in the bath, goes into coma and is relieved of all power, on regaining consciousness flunkies maintain elaborate facade for him that he is still President.
- the Brazilian option: ankle bracelet then 27 years in prison.
- the Italian option: body dumped in the town square, strung up over a gas station to prevent more grannies from pissing on corpse.
- the Libyan option: caught hiding in a drain pipe, kicked to death on the spot.
- the French option (original version): caught fleeing, encourages foreign army to invade, buried in an unmarked grave with severed head between feet.
- the French option (updated version): 5 years in prison, no appeal.
- or of course the classic - the German option: suicide while holed up in a bunker, body burnt immediately to avoid Italian option.
Some of you may blanch at the violence of several of these options and I share that reaction. I'd like to stress that I really, really think its best to avoid any violence for the sake of the country. I only include them because I wanted to be honest and include the full range of real-life outcomes for these charismatic, strongman leaders.
Personally, I suspect the 'Syrian option' is probably the best way for the country to come together after he is gone. I also think it's by far the most likely scenario. What about you?
Would be great for the country to avoid the mess of judicial wrangling too.
