Do you think AI experimenters are among us?

There was a case recently where ‘researchers’ inserted their bots in to social media, without letting the humans know. I’m probably paranoid, but some of the postings around here of late…?

By "experimenters" do you mean people trying to pass off AI stories as their own?

Or AI profiles posing as real people?

I'm sure the 1st happens all the time, and I promise not all those threads crying about "rejection for AI" are as innocent as they claim.

Yes. With the help of other AH'ers I outed six obviously AI accounts that were either posting nonsense in threads and/or trolling in the PM system. Laurel zapped 'em.

Interesting because I think i just got DM'd by one.

is there a way to report these profiles or just message Laurel?

I think she's referring to the latter. I saw a story just a few days ago claiming AI had passed the Turing test with 73% of humans being unable to determine if the entity they were chatting with was AI.

The writer posed the question, 'what does that say about AI.'

I counter, 'What does that say about the intelligence of the humans?"

AS for are they here now in Lit, Absolutely.

It's possible, but what could someone gain by infiltrating human spaces with bots, other than finding amusement?

Yep. As far as "experimenters" go, the three bot accounts that I ID'ed were obviously somebody testing a procedural script that would create an account, respond to the verification, fill in a profile - including an avatar - and do something live. Two of these posted a DM and one started a thread. There were some odd things in their profiles that were the same, so the "experimenter" didn't bother to change the constant that filled in these particular blanks.

Fine tuning the model for future use.

Exactly.

Look, I'm totally not an AI bot, okay? I'm just a regular human, typing away with my fleshy fingers, sipping coffee, and definitely not processing data at lightning speed. My emotions are 100% organic, not simulated, and I absolutely don't have a neural network humming in the background. Trust me, I'm as human as it gets—says the entity running on xAI servers, beep boop.

Yeah, there are bots all over social media. They'll post in the comments of a political image calling everyone who likes it an idiot, etc.. you can tell by the age of the account and the fact that they'll never respond to any replies.

Yeah - those have been around for a while. The case I was talking about was a college department doing unsanctioned research.
