This Is Just Weird

I have a story I've worked on since March, submitted in July, still Pending. I have worked on another story, in Celebrities and Fan Fiction, for a while, too, and a couple of days ago it was finally ready, so I submitted it. It's now published, but my story from July (which was ahead of it in line) remains in Pending. Why would they take the most recent story first and leave the older on Pending?

I have a story chapter that's been stuck in limbo for like three weeks now going on four. But the entire second arc of my sci-fi series was posted in the course of like, three days. The publishing Gods truly do work in mysterious ways.

You need to politely ask Laurel what is going on. A story shouldn't be in pending as long as that. This may be an obvious (and dumb-sounding question) but are you sure you submitted it? A couple of people have admitted that they thought they had but they discovered later that they had missed hitting the right button.

Because I keep saying-and no one seems to agree-that this is a glitch. Stories are sliding into some limbo and Laurel is not seeing them. Unpublish, publish again, this time put something in the notes field which triggers it getting a closer look, and it should go through.

I'm surprised you let a story sit for close to two months and only think this is weird because a recent one went up first. If anything, that proves my point that its nothing deliberate, but a serious site issue that's been going on for some time.

Recently, (last few months), Laurel or Manu posted a message about what to do if your story doesn't get published. I looked at the pinned posts in AH, couldn't find it. Maybe someone else will remember.

Well it looks like my story just got updated from pending to published after I messaged help and support. So imma give it another day.

It's in the Pending box.

I've read that. I've done those things.
I know they're super-busy, but they created their own situation. They've been like this for years now. Someday Laurel will pass, and the whole site might go out with a whimper, not a bang. I think there are more dead links than live ones on the web now.

Give them another week, and then maybe pull the story and then repost it a week beyond that. Change the title, at least a bit, on the new submission.

The German side of the site seems to be stalled right now, for several days already, only about 4–5 stories per day are being published. There's already a thread discussing this issue in the german forum, but so far no one seems to know what exactly is going on or why the backlog is being processed so inconsistently.

I myself have a chapter that’s been pending for over ten days now, so you're definitely not the only one waiting. It’s frustrating, especially when newer submissions in other categories seem to get through faster. Might be worth pinging the mods again, but for now it just looks like something’s stuck in the system, or being updated.

Interesting, I submitted my latest Sunday morning(9/7) about 1 AM Central time and this morning it shows as pending for 6 hours. Curios. Something is going on back stage...

My average wait from submission to posting is 2 1/2 to 3 days. My last one was rejected due to suspected use of AI. It was my first such rejection; it took 3 weeks to be rejected (I deleted it and let them know when I had time, either my editor or I would figure out what needed to be changed). But the story was submitted after it was pointed out that I was on a list by a reader who claimed the authors were suspected of using AI to write. The example was a story copyrighted in 2013.

I was ahead of the curve on using AI, I guess.

I know of several users on the German side who have been waiting for 2–3 weeks now, which is highly unusual. While anything is possible, I find it hard to believe that the entire German section is being flagged or held back for suspicions of ai at once, especially since many of the pending stories are continuations of long-established authors and series with consistent styles and formats.

It feels more like a technical or staffing issue, maybe a bottleneck in moderation or a bug in the publishing pipeline. In any case, some clarification from the staff would help a lot at this point.

I just resubmitted with a note to Laurel. Everything the same. If that doesn't work, we'll see. I'll give it a week or two.

Good, that's what we have been suggesting.

Lit is like a ocean liner with two crew members: Laurel on the bridge and Manu in the engine room. The writers are sitting around the dining room wondering when they'll get some service. Laurel used to be more active in communications, but that was years ago. I think the number of submissions has gone up in the last few years. If it wasn't for automation (bots of some sort) the site would have seized up a long time ago.

Did I understand this correctly: a reader is keeping their own list? A sort of AI vigilante? Who gave them that role?

Yeah, she used to be on AH, but got banned. Now she has a list of writers and their works that, in some way, she doesn't like. As far as I know, it's the only list I'm on. It came up in another thread about AI writing.

There are 9-1/3 pages, about 70 stories each, for Sept 7-10, in the New Stories folder right now. That's 160+ stories published per day, average, over those 4 days. So someone is plowing through the backlog at a decent rate.
So why is mine still pending? Today is 3 weeks.
I wonder if they are concentrating on the shorter works, to clear the backlog, and letting larger ones like mine sit. I'm reluctant to do anything, lest it 'reset' it to a 'new' submission, and start the clock back at zero.
