Writer's Block

not every character needs a complete backstory

Agreed, and I didn’t initially set out to give this character MORE backstory, just give her a solo adventure. But unfortunately yeah I think i bogged it down with the backstory aspect.

Maybe, he trapped her in this forest to try and undo her because he hates someone that loves her,

I considered a similar idea, Annej played a big role in helping overthrow her father, Asmodeus, who was conspiring against the Queen of Hell, Lucy Morningstar.

He was defeated in battle and imprisoned for treason. I considered the idea of one of his partners trying for revenge but @EmilyMiller already wrote something similar (see her Plucky Penny excerpt above) and I didn’t really wanna go to that well again.

Oh! Maybe instead of revenge, Lilith is his biggest rival. And in an attempt to one up on her, he's trying to do something? with her daughter.

In general I'm considering the Big Bad Wolf approach, but I'm not entirely sure he needs to be The Bad Guy either.

I haven't entirely abandoned the story but I just need the RIGHT idea to move forward. I'll know it when it comes to me.

What you’ve written is good. You just need the right hook.

you're too kind. it badly needs editing but I don't see the point until I find a way to finish it.
There are powers in the world other than Asmodeus. Does it have to link to him? As I have Emma say in my Halloween WIP:

“So,” began Lily, “You want us to go back to 1995 and what? Find out what happened to her? Rescue her? Disembowel the bad guy - I assume it’s a guy, right?”

Emily nodded, and my girlfriend went on, “Well
I might leave the disembowelment to Emma, I can’t stand the smell myself. But you love a good disembowelment, don’t you, sweetie?”

I smiled happily, thinking, ‘Ah! The memories.’

“And the bad guy?” continued Lily.

“If it’s Asmodeus again,” I said, “I’m gonna take a raincheck, OK? You can only defeat a demon lord so many times before it gets boring.”

“I never get bored of rubbing that asshole’s face into the dirt,” said Cozbi. “Not that anyone asked me of course,” she added when Emily gave her the look again.

Illustrating a point, Emily above is the ex-Sister Emily, now Justice Angel Emily, and not some annoying blonde bitch from PA.

Oh I agree; again with this supposed to be for the Dark Fairytales Challenge I was thinking about the Big Bad Wolf and how the character Lobo could be some kind of werewolf demon hybrid or whatever.

Again it's less about what he IS and more about WHY he's involved.

Looking back at this thread, Dj, I see that @sirhugs started it, and you mentioned your own writer's block on August 20. I hope this doesn't sound like some kind of heresy, but just because you can't complete this story doesn't necessarily mean you have writer's block. You seem to have gotten hung up on this one story, but we've all had stories that we didn't finish. It's okay to give yourself a break and do something else for a while. And we've all had slumps when their was nothing in the pipeline. (It looks like I've mixed metaphors of baseball with - oil refining?) We've all had that panicky or dismaying feeling, "I've run out of ideas forever." But you have done 92 stories and 2 poems, which is impressive. If you can do that much in, what, four years, you do have a talent for it.

Emily, don't just be the Steinbeck of Smut. Go big, be the Tolstoy of Smut, the Chaucer of Smut. No one here will say, "No, you're not." If you say that you are, then it must be true.

Actually, go for the Jane Austen of Smut. She just left out the explicit parts, but that doesn't mean she didn't know about them.

In honesty, this is one of several stalled stories over the past few months.

But I see your point, and I'm sure at some point the writing fog will be lifted for me.

I kinda brought up this story in particular I suppose as a point that you cant force it if you're not feeling it.

Because I just figured maybe I could plow my way through it and find an ending.

Obviously it didn't work.

I like the aliteration. And Steinbeck is my favorite author 😊.

Oh, that other identity you have, Rollo Thomassi, isn't that from L.A. Confidential? Supposedly it's police slang for a "John Doe," but I think the screenwriter just made it up.

I actually thought about this when I woke up this morning, but I had things to do. The problem I'm having is that I'm trying to picture what a succubus, much less any demon, is like. They are supernatural entities but they have a physical reality too it seems. A biological one as well? Do they have sex just for pleasure or can they reproduce using it? Are they immortal, or do they age and die eventually? Do they have some tasks that must be performed? Like most Christian-based mythology it's a mixture of the highly specific with the deliberately vague. That's certainly why I lapsed from Catholic dogma early on.

For the record, I'm an atheist.

But @EmilyMiller and I have had a lot of fun playing in the Judeo Christian mythology sandbox, twisting, reshaping and re-imagining it to suit our own creative purposes.

We have our own version of God, and the Devil, and even our own origin of the universe, and it's very different from the book of Genesis lol.

My character Annej is a Succubus, but only in the loosest sense of the mythology. I'm not beholden to any rules there although I use the mythology where it fits. But on the surface she looks human, a petite redhead.

Our supernatural beings are immortal BUT can be destroyed by someone more powerful than them, and there are various beings of various power levels, with God AKA Alpha and Satan AKA Lucy Morningstar (Emily made the Devil a woman 😉 ) being at the top.
